Erm ... £35 celeron beats out big-ass E8400 at stock. That's pretty impressive...
It needs a LOT of overclocking to get those chips anywhere near i3 performance, and given they still command significant premiums second hand (hard to pick up a Q9550 for less than £50). I guess if you already own one it's worth knowing that you can clock the nuts off it to get close to i3 performance (assuming you've got a motherboard that'll go that far), but I think that article is more of an indication of just how good the very low end chips are nowadays. Would've been interesting to see a heavily clocked A8-5600k in the mix...![]()
It does seem completely pointless to get an old cpu on an old motherboard with old interfaces rather than just getting low end new stuff
I have a 5 year old E8400 @4Gz and I'm happily playing Bioshock with a HD6950 @ 60FPS, I'll make the jump to Haswell this year. I think I bought that chip for £128, not bad at £25 a year.

I'm still running these old chips as well. Quite adequate for what I need. Just poped the Q6700 up to 3400 the other day, that was on a p35 board.
I have a mate that runs an old Intel chip and he is very happy with it. He as bought a new GPU and he says that as long as his rig can play his games, he is happy....
If it Aint broke......
The Core 2's were great little chips. Only got rid of my E4300 at christmas. 6 years at nearly double it's rated speed and quite silly temps, stonking for £44. Still went at a fair old clip, rock solid too. Dual cores had it's day now, especially with the new consoles launching soon. Surprised how well the quad's hung in though.
I think I'll need to wait a little longer before even thinking about replacing my C2Q setup. Can't afford to replace it at the moment anyway, but it looks like I would need to throw down for an i7 to see a drastic shift in performance, which is what I always aim for in an upgrade these days.
Just putting an SSD in my desktop should see me for a while yet.
Shocking, I will say my Q9550 only recently made way for my 3570k and it was clocked at 3.42mhz for that review gives a real indication of what I had.
You do have to take into account the cost of better mobo and cooling to get that level of performance with the older chips. This erodes a large chunk of the savings when compared with going for a higher end CPU with a stock cooler and unclockable chipset/BIOS
