AMD FX 4100 Black Edition or AMD FX 6100 Black Edition?

I'm investing in a new CPU, but am torn between the two. I'm willing to pay the extra money for the FX 6100, but I don't really know what software would actually utilise all six cores. Any other AM3+ processor suggestions around the same price range are very welcome.

Well the 6300 is the one to go for imo.

Okay, thanks, I'm not really very experienced in the actual technology behind computer components, what do the extra cores do, if you don't mind me asking

Many programs can utilise multiple cores, not to mention that you will probably be running multiple programs at once.

Hi, as Willzz said you should definitely consider the FX-6300. Newer and all round better chip that costs £1 more on scan than the FX-6100
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-f...che-95w-retail

The FX-6300 is a great choice as it can turbo up to 4.1Ghz, but you also have the extra "cores" when needed, meaning you can do more "work" at the same time.

For instance if you render, transcoding or file conversions you'll benefit from more cores.

What will you be using your computer for?

Can you just not overclock to get the same speeds as the 6350?

More than likely you could, an extra 400mhz isn't much.
For everyday tasks I wouldn't like the thought pushing from 95w to 125w plus an extra £20. I wouldn't personally say its worth it .

Re: AMD FX 4100 Black Edition or AMD FX 6100 Black Edition?

Yeah, that is one of the issues as I did want to keep the wattage at below 100 so I'd have be paying more for the processor, along with extra for a more powerful power supply

Re: AMD FX 4100 Black Edition or AMD FX 6100 Black Edition?

Programs either use lots of cores, or they want 1 core to go as fast as possible.

The 6300 has a higher boost speed when using just one core than the quads for the one core case, and when using lots of cores they won't be quite as fast but you have 50% more of them which more than makes up for it.

The older 6100 seems a poor economy at current prices, they really aught to shave a load off that to make it interesting.

Games seem to be moving towards using more cores in the future.
