What a poor review: seems all they *might* have done is POSTed their 4770K at 5.4GHz as they have no benches, not even a CPU-Z. Still, even that is probably a very golden sample.

    Re: Haswell review thread

I find a lot of these overclocking results very odd, with people using very weird motherboard combinations.

Hexus use the UD5H for Z77 but instead of using the Z87 UDH5 for Haswell they use the D3H which is about half the price.
Techpowerup do a similar thing, the bottom of the range Asus Z87 and the top of the range Z77 OC Formula.
Bit-tech use a standard Intel motherboard for Z87 and an Asus ROG board for Z77.

It's not like plenty of sites haven't got hold of decent motherboards like the Gigabyte Sniper, MSI Gaming or Z87X-OC.
Or if you really can't get hold of them then at least use an equivalent motherboard for the Z77 testing.

Worse they use simplistic overclocking methods like only using the bclk (techpowerup), or while Hexus try the multiplier they keep very quiet on what voltages they tried or what cooling they used.

    Really? What were you expecting?

I am not impressed enough to part with any money, but these days any improvement in performance is difficult. TBH I was expecting nothing on desktop so the gains they show were a surprise bonus.

Which is why I am surprised that (it looks like) Intel will once again segment their market by denying AVX2 for Pentiums and Celerons. I know SA's Charlie likes to go on about Intel and their love of fuse blowing and it looks like they will most likely just fuse the whole AVX2 part.

If they want adoption of their new instructions, they should do some more work and figure out a way to bring those instructions to their whole lineup (sans Atom of course) but maybe running slower on the low end parts. Maybe by using microcode to emulate AVX2 on the AVX(1) part or something. Or put wait states in. Anything is better than just fragmenting the market with half-hearted support. A lot more work for sure, but if they are that found of disabling features they should be willing to put some effort into that.

    Re: Haswell review thread

I read an article that the chips shipped out to system builders are running much hotter than the review samples, limiting the OC ceiling to around 4.2-4.4GHz.

I think Intel will be relatively quick to update the stepping on the retail models.

Relatively quick being what, a month? Two?

Just asking as I'm about to upgrade (which means either way I'll be waiting for motherboard/gpu stock), and I might as well hold out if this is something Intel will fix quickly.

On the other hand the story is probably still developing, so I think I just answered my own question: either way, wait.

Yea I see that too seems their new chips are getting hotter and not a big performance increase either I'm sticking with what I've got for now

    Re: Haswell review thread

I don't think Intel are going to do any update, there's no problem as far as they are concerned.

But also I don't pay much heed to these reports that significant numbers of chips are limited to 4.2ghz.
The vast majority seem to be getting 4.5-4.6 of course there are people on lower and higher, but I've not heard of anyone stuck at 4.2 on cpu.

Personally I'd be quite happy with 4.2ghz really for standard use. Of course it does depend on how many volts it takes to get there.

They increase stepping as and when the manufacturing improves - not always to address any particular problem, but if they get better quality clips then they can sell more of them at the rated speeds.
