    Who's looking forward to Kalveri

For a while now, AMD has lagged behind in single core/lightly threaded performance. There have been fairly consistent leaks/press releases with a 30% IPC improvement for the past year or so for Piledriver>Steamroller.
Kalveri will also have a more tight coupling between CPU and GPU which can only be a good thing plus it's pretty much guaranteed that the GFX performance will improve substantially over Richland. I would be surprised if the top <=65w kalveri APU isn't a perfect HTPC CPU. With the added bonus that you'll be able to game on it as well. Not at high settings but that's not the end of the world.

Re: Who's looking forward to Kalveri

I don't know about this "Kalveri" thing, but I'm eagerly waiting for Kaveri. Primarily because I'm one of those who will wet the bed at the mention of heterogeneous computing and unified memory. It will also mean a better generation of 'good enough' gaming PCs. AMD is pushing hard on all fronts to get their multi-threaded and GPU accelerated vision of the future to developers and every refinement of their architecture can only be a good thing.

A 65W chip is can be pretty overkill for a HTPC even with their current lineup (see A10-5700 or 6700) which are pretty competent 720p gaming systems. The rumored upcoming 45W chips (6700T and 6500T) would slot more neatly into the HTPC environment and may still be quite usable for light gaming.

Yeah I am actually holding out on building a new computer in anticipation of Kaveri. I think the make or break thing with kaveri could be if DDR5 memory is sorted out for motherboards.

Re: Who's looking forward to Kalveri

I'm not that convinced anymore that Kaveri will bring much over the Trinity in ST department. Even if the IPC boost is a huge 20-25%, the total ST performance improvement might be just ~10-15% higher due to possible frequency hit (possibly because GF messy node and possibly because design will lose some of frequency potential due to complexity).

In any case Kaveri will be a better all around product than Trinity/Richland. If it comes close to FX63xx in x86 grunt and really performs on the level of discrete 7750(DDR3), then it should finally be better (x86) alternative than i5, Haswell included. iGPU part will certainly blow Haswell HD4600 and maybe Iris pro out of the water (Richland already spanks HD4600 so not such a difficult task I suppose ).

Hmmm, it just might. GPU arch will be GCN, but all indications are they'll be sticking to 384 cores. In pure grunt terms it won't get anywhere near the 7750, but matched with 2GHZ+ DDR3 it will actually have more memory bandwidth available than a DDR3 7750. Since AMD graphics cards since the 4650 have tended to be memory bottlenecked rather than FLOPS bottlenecked, there's a reasonable chance of Kaveri matching a DDR3 7750. DDR5 7750 would still be well out of reach though.

As to Kaveri + GDDR5, I suspect that will end up limited to laptops and specialist designs, as no-one sells GDDR5 DIMMs. Frankly, with 2GHz+ DDR3 widely available and the number of GPU cores planned to remain static, I don't think that's such a big issue (although make no mistake, 128bit DDR3 memory *does* bottleneck a GPU with the power AMD's APUs are currently toting). Where it will really make a difference is in ultrabook-style laptops, as Kaveri with GDDR5 soldered onto the motherboard should prove very competitive with Intel's GT3e offering.

Looks like I'll be looking forward to it for longer than I'd hoped http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/1...odenamed-beema
A small silver lining: some of the APU's may still be released this year.
Maybe if the FM2+ motherboards appear earlier I'll still be happy.

Kaveri will be on 28nm so hopefully will at least be able to match or even beat Richland frequencies at the same power level.

AFAIK,the GF 28NM process is bulk and the 32NM process is SOI. It could be that AMD will go for power consumption and TDP improvements instead, which might mean better performance for their lower TDP CPUs in laptops.

However,it might also mean that the 65W TDP desktop Kaveri is the sweet spot just like Richland.

I would be more than happy with that. I like my cooling quiet and my mATX cube cases so low power is good to me.

Re: Who's looking forward to Kalveri

I was seriously looking forward to Kaveri, in fact i was delaying purchasing other processors.
However its rumored that there has been a delay in production. Some sites are now saying Q1 2014 some are saying Q2.
Plus the successor has been announced for 2015. Oh AMD...

Why delay? Either you need an upgrade now, or you don't. If you need more grunt than a 6800K, then get a 6300 cpu on AM3+.

Having said that, if I could hold off on an FM2 purchase a short while until the FM2+ motherboards come out, then I think that would be worthwhile.

    http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/A88XMA/

I notice ASUS are saying that an FM2+ CPU is required for PCIe3 support, so it looks like they are finally sorting that out.

Re: Who's looking forward to Kalveri

Kaveri would be a true test for the AMD steamroller cores. I genuinely believe that if AMD can pull the steamroller cores off well, it could be a new Sandy Bridge moment, finally putting AMD much closer to Intel than ever before. Then again, only time will tell.

It may be the original thought - that OEMs will get Kaveri this year, but it won't be available retail until the new year. In saying that, the FM2+ boards are available in a few days, which might suggest a release of at least one of the new APUs this year.
