    Can a E6400 play bf3/bf4 with a 6850?

My friend currently has a 8800 GTS and E6400 @ 2.1GHZ dual core and 2gb ram and he can't get bf3 to work so my question is if I give/sell him my old gpu will his cpu be able to handle bf3/bf4 on low settings my guess is that he will and his gpu is whats causing him to not be able to play bf3 as generally games use the gpu more then the cpu.

Before anyone posts the minimum reccomended specs I know his rig is slightly under on the cpu side but I think it might be able to manage if I sell him my 6850 (I had it with a phenom II 965, 8gb of ram and could play at high with 60+fps) I just want to be sure that he will be able to play it because I don't want to seem like I am giving him false hope.

Oh and overclocking the cpu isn't really an option because I think hes using the stock cooler and I have no experience at it.

It is a very CPU intensive game, and ideally at least needs a quad core CPU.

Its going to be very very very slow and sluggish, load times especially with the 2GB ram he has.

The E6400 is a old cpu now and will be overwhelmed by modern games. Motherboard and cooling allowing he could overclock it. He should get around 3.2Ghz out of it. It will still hold the gpu back but at least it's a free boost. The lack of ram is a problem though.

    Re: Can a E6400 play bf3/bf4 with a 6850?

Fwiw I do all my non-sim gaming on an E8400@3.2GHz, with a 5870 @ 1080p. While I sometimes scale back some of the fancier (and rarely missed) FX it runs everything I throw at it incredibly well. Including BF3. Though I only played a bit of the single player before getting distracted by better stories.

Remember few titles are made with modern PCs as their target. Only flight and racing sims justified my other machine, a 2500k. But I never feel the need to move over and fire that up for anything else.

    Re: Can a E6400 play bf3/bf4 with a 6850?

and if your doing that your missing the point of modern games - have to scale stuff right back? might as well get an xbox....

    minimum specs for BF3:

    •Processor: Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or Althon X2 2.7 GHz
    •RAM: 2GB
•Graphic card: DirectX 10 or 11 compatible Nvidia or AMD ATI card, ATI Radeon 3870 or higher, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher.

the game wont start with the 2.1ghz cpu

BF4 is the same except they expect 4GB minimum and with minimum spec is `low` all the way on all settings.

    Just found this

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3foCrxiyo7M

Hence why I said dont tell me the minimum specs because it seems you can play it on a E6400 like I thought and thats on 1080p my friend is playing on 1280x768 so I think its do able by the looks of it.

But that guy has 4GB ram. Windows 7 itself gets pretty slow on 2GB.

The whole point of PC gaming is flexibility, not bragging rights. If the e-peen is strong in folk, they can burn several grand on 1KW PSUs and SLI Titans. But if you're sensible you can be very frugal and very happy in this hobby.

I'm not going to waste anyone's time (especially mine!) on a fully fledged hardware test, but these are the settings I'm using for BF3...

...and a Fraps session shows sesison lows of 30fps, with the average hovering around 50 and the max at 60, There is no point, when playing, when I feel things are nasty looking or slow. But I appreciate that if I was competitive online I'd want a rock solid 60+fps. That's why my e-peen machine (2500k@4.2/7950/12GB), down the other end of the desk, is what I use for flight and racing sims. In those I never want the FPS to fall below the triple screen refresh rate. But for everything else a 4GB (3GB used during BF3) Core2Duo with a decent graphics card is happy as a pig in the proverbial muck.

It's worth noting that my dual core CPU is not running solidly maxxed out during a gaming session, but it is bumping along the top. It's also worth noting, for the OP, that a 5870 is quite a chunk faster than a 6850, thanks to ATI/AMD playing silly beggars with their naming. But there's plenty of room in my settings to trim back without losing anything appreciable from the experience.

Mmm... for someone who wasn't going to waste a lot of time, I appear to be typing a lot.

Bottom line, I'd first investigate overclocking the machine in question. If that works well, and stably, I'd bump it up to 4GB. Then I'd look at the graphics card. But it may well be easier to put all that time and minor upgrade cash into a better, long term upgrade.

    Re: Can a E6400 play bf3/bf4 with a 6850?

BF3 scales well upto 8 threads, but really needs 4 cores to have a decent experience on MP maps.

Try getting a secondhand Core2quad for your mate.

BF4 seems to be even more taxing on PC hardware than BF3.

The Phenom II X2 550BE is around E8400 to E8500 level IIRC.

BF3 runs on an E8400 in high at about a min fps of 30. an E8400 can be picked up for as little as £20 and Buy it now on eBay for an average of £25.

I have 2gb of ram atm and to be honest, its a pain in the ass for minecraft on minimum settings.
