    Too Cool?

Ok, so I've had to assemble a new PC, as my last one finally died after 6 years loyal service. I've chosen an AMD FX-6350 as a processor, and because the case suited it, a 240mm watercooling radiator (Coolermaster Seldon 240mm).

I'm now worried that my CPU is running a little too cool, during normal desktop operatation it's reporting 7 degrees centigrate, and even after pushing up the multiplier to x22, and running Prime95, I'm only seeing temps of 37 degrees.

Will this damage the processor by running too cool? am I better pushing up the overclock slightly more or disabling the power saving settings so it runs at a more consistant temperature?

    Re: Too Cool?

Well, there's no way it's running below ambient, so unless your room is 7 degrees Celsius (I sincerely hope it isn't!), I would suggest that the monitoring is going wrong somewhere along the line.

And I don't see why it would be problematic if it was true - a lot of people run actively cooled loops and their processors at stock/unutilised must get pretty cold.

    Re: Too Cool?

AMD CPUs have funky temperatures and measurements (least I had with every APU configuration).
Don't worry about the "too cool" issue.
Most electrical products are to function perfectly from 0 to 60 and (some) CPUs have even higher tolerance.
It is a circuit, not a combustion engine, you can and should (!) keep it cool.

    Re: Too Cool?

I have the exact same processor and the exact same thing.
Initially, I was all, "Hell yeah, I'm at 3ºC - This thing is wicked!!!!!".... then common sense stepped in, ha ha!

As Bonebreaker says, a lot of AMD CPUs are a bit off. Apparently they get better above 40ºC...?

    Re: Too Cool?

The only problem running equipment in cold conditions is the risk of condensation, which is a "bad thing" (Tm).

But as Jim says, you can't cool it below the ambient temperature of the room (unless you are using active cooling, like a heat pump) so it will be the monitoring that is incorrectly reporting the temperature.

I assume, since it's the AMD processor giving duff readings, that the temperature sensor is in the CPU, not on the mobo... Or is there a sensor on a mobo as well?

If the latter, will the Asus AI suite still work work on, say, an MSI board as well?
I'd love to know my actual CPU temp, if only so I know how well my H100 is doing... !

IIRC,the AMD FX chips rely on the motherboard sensor for temperature. I could be wrong.

I would get an MSI or a Gigabyte. MSI do not have a good track record with their AMD motherboards.

Huh? Then why would I get an MSI?

I'm actually being given an MSI 970A-G46, so can't argue with that... but are you saying you would or wouldn't get an MSI... or Asus are naff AMD boards?

Either way, I assume the AI Suite will work on other boards?

    Re: Too Cool?

Ai asuite will be reporting temperatures closest to the true values (probably).

CAT was (again, probably) against MSI boards.

I think I read somewhere the temperatures reported on AMD CPUs are just a difference value (given each CPU/family) and the board manufacturer should write the software accordingly (if it reports 3 degrees and it shouldn't, then it should be like 40+3).
Will try to find the article.

Ok, thanks everyone for the feedback. Might still try and push the overclock higher though, after all, what's the point of a 240mm radiator if I don't give it some heat to cope with right?

    Why?
    Have I missed something?
Have I just installed a piece of junk in my system?

I'd be very interested in that.
My MSI board is reporting more realistic temperatures, at least and HWMon is concurring with the readings.
