Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
But you also have the many-page threads over whether you just put a blob on and squish it down, whether you use a spreader to make it square, whether you put the heatsink on and wiggle it around, whether you wiggle the heatskink around or in a square pattern...
Depends entirely over how fussy and nitpicky you really want to be!!

Sure - but that was kinda my point. Very rarely is this situation going to happen for most people. I also notice a heck of a less difference on air when it comes to paste for some reason.
When we start getting to this stage, I'd rather just delid the CPU :D

I don't think I'd risk it! Can't really warrant possibly spending 800 quid because I didn't do it right the first time, just to get a little more GHz out of it :P
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
800 quid? That's one hell of a CPU :D
I'm just debating if I should delid, but there is a lot of mixed reactions to it on the web.

400 quid times 2, implying broke the first one
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
Arctic Ceramique here. Soon as I use my current stock up (pretty sure a good 2-3 applications still left in the nozzle still) will start a new MX-4.
To be honest, unless you are comparing really expensive stuff, even the cheapest white grease in the bag is usually better that the gray stock thing.
EDIT: Thermal Compound Roundup
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
Difference between best and worst could be as much as 10 degrees. I suggest, mx-2 (mx-2 is slightly better than mx-4).Or if you can find one, try Shin-Etsu 7783
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
I've used Arctic Silver 5 for a long time and its served me well.
One reason I've used it over others was simply because they made a larger 12g sized tube. I could use it for many processors without needing to top up so regularly as I fix PC's on the side for friends/family. Its easy to apply, I dont bother rubbing it into the heatsink as they suggest and it works absolutely fine. My i7 980 is still at 28 idle after a year 1/2 so im happy with that. Thats with a Noctua fan I decided not to use their paste in my PC.
In another PC I've built with a Noctua fan I used the supplied paste and i'd say its better.
However, reviewers seem to rate AC5 quite low in performance yet real users rate it quite high.
I'm not sure but this review could be an ad for Coollabratories, anyone tested it?

Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
I tend to use the stuff that comes with the cpu cooler, there's always more than enough for multiple builds. Think the last one I used was from Gelid.

I think it takes a lot of guts to delid your cpu, lol I have the fear.
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
I've used Arctic Silver 5 and it has lowered my temps a lot. I applied it in a thin layer, as opposed to the "rice grain" method and it worked great.
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
I would think that the cooler and its surface would be more important than the thermal compound and therefore should receive more attention.
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
Noctua's NT-H1 is my compound of choice.

I seriously had to rehost that to avoid using OC4minus1D because it's a censored word I cannot believe this, whatever kind of trolling has been endured here that necessitated the censorship of the name of another forum....
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
I normally use artic silver just because when I first started building pcs I brought alot of it because I thought it was worth it since I knew I was going to build a lot of pcs But, I now know that the difference between thermal pastes is very minimal and by minimal I mean about 5 degrees Fahrenheit AT MOST. So just go with whatever tickles your fancy weather it's artic silver or the paste you get in the box.
Re: Thermal Compound / Paste Choice
i like to use arctic cooling mx-4
