    Worth upgrading and compatibility issues

    Hello guys(and girls)
I recently bought an i5 4670k on a z87 motherboard (gigabyte sniper z5s) and since Intel is rolling out their new Haswell refresh and soon the Broadwell I was wondering, will the i7-5930k (5th gen) compatible with my motherboard? If so, would the upgrade be worth it? or if it isn't would the i7 4790k be worth an upgrade? I know it WILL be compatible, this is the article I saw to prove it:
    http://wccftech.com/intel-devils-canyon-confirmed-working-z87-motherboards-asus-bios-update/

I know this is an ASUS motherboard BUT it is still MORE than possible that Gigabyte will follow.

BTW I am only gaming and doing some project on visual studio for my programming course, nothing else.
At first I didnt thought I'd need an upgrade now but since watch_dogs recommends an 8 core CPU, Id really like to go with the 5th gen i7 -5930k with 6 cores on my z87, or at least the i7 4970k at 4ghz with 8 LOGICAL cores...

Re: Worth upgrading and compatibility issues

I would say that for now, it isn't worth upgrading. I would say wait at least a few months after the 5th gen comes out to save money and get better deals, that is if you're not too into Watch Dogs as the i5-4670k is capable. However, if you really are into Watch Dogs and or want to do a lot of multitasking... then get the i7-5930k, but you would need to wait for Gigabyte to issue a BIOS update covering 5th Generation CPUs else you may run into system instability issues.

EDIT: Sorry but your motherboard isn't compatible with the new i7 5930K as it has a 1150 socket and the CPU has a 2011 socket.

Ignore what I said above! I'm too tired

Re: Worth upgrading and compatibility issues

Thanks a lot for your recommendation, it isn't that Im ALOT INTO Watch_Dogs, it was just a concern about other upcoming games... but, just asking, the i7-4970k, isnt that just a 4th gen? I was sure the Devil's Canyon were 4th gen Refresh? Plus do you think the 5th gen NOT 2011 socket but Actual 1150 socket WILL be compatible with my motherboard?

Re: Worth upgrading and compatibility issues

Sorry, that was a typo, I meant the i7-5930k and not the i7 4970k for the Devil's Canyon bit - again a bit tired back then and I apologise.

The 5th gen 1150 socket will most likely be compatible with your motherboard, but again you would need to check your manufacturer and see if they issue a BIOS update.

tbh I think it's a big assumption that Intel's 5th generation will even be released on s1150: of their recent sockets only 1155 made it more than one generation, and then only two. Until Intel give an official confirmation, I wouldn't count on there not being another socket change. In the mean time, the Haswell refresh (Devil's Canyon) is literally that - a refesh of the existing chips. You've got a k-series chip already, so unless you think you need more threads or a higher potential overclock, you may as well stay where you are: the i5 4670k will be a good chip for years to come
