    Core i3 Advice

    I was thinking of buying a second hand core i3 but then saw something about Devil's Canyon - to prove how little I know about IT components these days

    Are second hand prices likely to fall? Are any new i3 processors planned in the near future?

    SB and IB i3 CPUs are selling for £40-45 (socket 1155).

    Socket 1156 i3 for slightly cheaper, £30-35.

    Prices will fall once the newly released CPUs will "force" users to upgrade thus saturating the market to a certain extent where offer will exceed demand what will lower prices. But I don't predict more that £5-10 of a fall.

    What is your budget and what is it for?

    I was going to build a test rig, test Win 8, Linux etc.

    Been offered a i3 3220 for £48, mobo for around £42, have some DDR3.

    The CPU price slightly inflated and for the £42 you can have a new MoBo supporting the i3 CPU.

    EDIT: Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H for £40.52 from Scan.co.uk

    For testing wouldn't be a Kabini good enough?

    Devil's Canyon chips are just unlocked Haswell refresh CPU's.

    I don't think there are any i3 Devil's Canyon processors planned.

    Bought a i3 2100 and motherboard for £40 off another forum. The cpu doesn't have onboard graphics but I have a spare gpu.

    I spoke too soon

    Couldn't get them working, the guy thinks, the motherboard is forcing output to the motherboard DVI/D SUB ports

    I'm going to try another cpu and see how I get one before returning the CPU
