    Is it worth?

    I currently have z77 mobo, i5 2400 and 8gb ram.
Im planning to buy 4690k and new mobo but im thinking about skylake. Is it worth upgrading now or wait for skylake?

    Re: Is it worth?

Depends whether you 'need' to upgrade now or how much it'll cost you. The z77 should let you oc four bins to 3.5 plus boost on your 2400. DDR4 is meant to be a bit steep so maybe lay off the upgrade until the memory drops on price and matures.

Get a 3570k and oc it to 4.5ghz?

Since the i5 2400 isn't an unlocked 'K' class processor, I don't think it can be overclocked all that much? Personally I would just wait for Skylake. Your current motherboard should allow for 'multi-core enhancement' (or similar feature), allowing all 4 cores to run at the maximum turbo speed of 3.4Ghz. Why do you feel the need to upgrade though? the i5 2400 is still a very capable CPU for gaming purposes...

    Re: Is it worth?

Its called the 'limited'overclock. Removed from haswell by the overly generous Intel overlords.

My 3470 runs 3.8-4. I'm wondering now if I can get it to boost to 4ghz on all four cores although the performance increase is probably not worth it.

    I'd probably wait as well.

What do you play that challenges your CPU?

    Re: Is it worth?

I would wait for the broadwell / skylake CPUs to come out, then a possible move to DDR4

    Re: Is it worth?

You could always pick up a second hand 3570k/3770k. Ivybridge to Haswell was only around 5% increase in performance. No doubt the next gen will be yet another tiny performance increase as well.

    Re: Is it worth?

    No.

No point upgrading for 20-30% more oomph unless there is a specific need.

Apparently there is only a 4-8% performance increase from haswell refresh to skylake.

    Re: Is it worth?

Disappointing numbers for the 6 series.

I picked up a used z68 deluxe + 3770k + 16gb ram for around the same price as a new i7 and at this rate; it looks like it will be lasting until Cannonlake.

    Re: Is it worth?

    I'd recommend having a look at this ;

    http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smart...hp?itemid=1158

Not really worth the upgrade from the i5 2400 really with only little gains each generation. I'm in the same boat with my i5 2500K and awaiting the newer ranges to see if that will warrant a full system overhaul or not

I think the OP found somewhere where they told him what he wanted to hear

Great article Lee. I have a 3470 and can't really see any point in upgrading. The article just confirms it makes little difference.

    Re: Is it worth?

The difference is tiny, you won't notice it in games.

My overclocked 2600k running at 4.6ghz still benches significantly faster than the new i7 I have in my work PC. It's also easier to keep cool (due to having a soldered die vs the newer i5/i7s pasted one) :/
