Oveclocking Fx-6300 and multiplier drops under stress test.

    Here is my current setup.

    Motherboard:Gigabyte GA-870A-USB3L
    CPU:AMD FX-6300 @ 4.1 GHz with Hyper 212 Evo Cooler
    Memory:2 x SK Hynix 2 GB DDR3-1333
    Storage:120gb OCZ Vertex 460, 120GB Kingston SV200, 500GB Segate Drive, 2 x 1TB WD Drive, 640GB WD Drive
    Graphics card:Asus HD 7850 DirectCU II V2 2GB
    PSU:OCZ 750 Watt
    Case:Sharkoon Green T9
    Operating System:Windows 8.1 64bit
    Monitor:LG 34UM65-P Ultrawide
    Internet:6MB Plusnet

i just replaced my Phenom 2 965 and fitted my fx-6300 last night and turned off core boost, cool and quite and c1e.

set my overclock to 4.1ghz on stock voltage and ran a stress test.

started to notice that the multiplier went from 20.5 to 15 for a sec then jamp back up.

i adjusted the voltage up a notch and tired again and same issue.

Anyone know why this might happen. never had this issue before with my Phenom 965 OC

Re: Oveclocking Fx-6300 and multiplier drops under stress test.

What happens to the temps and voltage when the clock drops?

It could just be part of the more intelligent power/voltage management of the chip, it could be a false reading (my A6-3500 repeatedly registers in CPU-Z as running at 0MHz at the minute, even on the most recent version) due to driver issues etc., it could even be a particular point where the stress test is less stressful, and the power management drops the CPU clock (although that shouldn't happen if you've got C&Q turned off). Might be worth having another trawl through the bios for any other power states that are turned on though: modern CPUs have far more than just full-whack and idle.

The fact that it jumps back to 20.5 and keeps running the test without instability suggests that it's nothing to be overly worried about.

What is reporting the multiplier value?

    Thanks for the replys.

Under Aida stress test, the temps under load are around 32 deg at 1.21v. The board temp is around 40 deg and my VRMs have a good heatsink on it.

It runs stable and I played GTA last night and it was rock solid. No obvious signs of performance loss.

Under stress, Aida and cpuz both show the multiplier drop. It goes from 20.5 to 15 for a sec.

My board is running a beta bios from Gigabyte that allows the board to run the FX chip.
