How will release of Skylake effect current gen CPU prices.

Hello,

I’m overdue for my 4 year main PC upgrade and have been playing the waiting for the next big thing game for the last 6 months (decide on 980 then wait for the 980 Ti, decide of the 5930 then wait for Skylake).
I realise that the performance data for Skylake is mostly marketing crap and speculation just now, but going by past pricing could someone please tell me if the release of the new Skylake CPUs will likely drive down the prices of the 5820 and 5930 by any real amount in the next month or two or will it not be until the enthusiast processors come out next year that this will happen?

Would not expect much in the next month or two, no.

Skylake will be 4c only for a while so I wouldn't expect any movement of the E platform for the foreseeable.

I doubt if the prices will drop at all. They didn't with Ivybridge cpu's when Haswell launched and I can't see it being any different this time. Skylake is going to be more expensive than Haswell anyway plus it's a new socket so ther'e really no reason for them to drop their prices. With the Broadwell i5 coming in at £216 I can see the Skylake i5 6600k launching at over £220 and the i7 6700k over £310.

Unless Skylake is significantly better, not much would be my guess. Even USED sandybridge CPU still sell for £150+ and they are now over 4 years old.

There is barely any performance difference between them, so prices are staying quite static :/

They probably won't budge. This has been the way for a while now. Even second hand prices are maintaining themselves.

I guess I’ll wait to see what the performance of Skylake is like but if it’s not a substantial boost, which it seems it won't be, I’ll just go for an X99 based system.
I have a fair collection of HD-DVD films that I need to backup to disk and compress before the ageing drive craps out so could do with the 6 cores.

The X99 CPUs (if you mean socket 2011) will probably still be faster anyway. Especially for multi-threaded stuff.

since broadwell is AFK and skylake needs a new platform instead of reusing DDR3 in 1150 - probably wont change much at all

Well, Skylake has been released and it's WAY over priced...

A 5820k is still a better overall performer due to 6 physical cores. What a fail By Intel :/

DDR3 was cheapest several years ago. The price has more than doubled since I bought my 32GB

Prices have dropped a lot recently. Still not quite down to 2011 when I bought an 8GB kit for £25, but the current £35 is a lot better than the £70 is was a few months ago.

Not now. Production will be slowly moving to DDR4 meaning DDR3 prices will now gradually increase as DDR4 prices come down.

it's a very slow effect though.
