Time Frame: Need to Build a new PC in the next 2 months.
Use: Gaming / Video Editing / Rendering / Coding / Trading/Work
Budget: £1,500 including GTX 980 ti (£500) therefore about £1,000 left
Resolution: 27 inch 2k IPS G sync Acer predator monitor (maybe an additional 1080p) monitor too
I want to try and use latest technology so it's the 5820K vs 6770K.
Which is the best option and why for my budget and needs?
I would personally go for X99 myself as the additional cores in the CPU and the quad channel RAM will give better performance when video editing and rendering, especially if your planning to go down the 4K route soon as well.
What he said, X99, skylake does not replace the 'extreme' x99 chipset. 6 cores vs 4 cores. For your needs and budget x99 will be better

This is the build I'm hoping to build in September / October - Aria PC said they can price match so I can get all components from one company which is a sweet deal
Nice build. Maybe change the ssd to a MX200 or an 850 EVO/Pro? Nothing wrong with the MX100 its really good (I own it myself :) )
Just that the mx200 is the upgrade from it and 850 evo/pro newer and around the same price
Id go X99 and overclock it :)...
The two cores make a huge difference in compiling/encoding. Also you can cheap out more on ram as ram speeds have no effect on X99 speeds but may affect SkylakeOverclocking if you use BCLK.
I'd say if gaming unless you got money to burn then go for skylake as the price difference is actually a fair bit even though prices are coming down and the skylake i7 is not far behind the x99 you're after in multicore operations currently.
If you intend a lot of rendering then go the other way as multiple cores overall will still be faster.
Personally I'd save the £200 quid if for gaming and place it in the gfx card as this will have more bang for buck in gaming and take the slight drop in performance on the rendering as there is not a lot in it on the two
I'm tempted to go X99 for my next upgrade, those 2 extra cores may come in handy what with dev's getting on the ball with multithreading.
The more I read about Skylake the more it looks like Intel are being too greedy, they have found a manufacturing process that allows them to make CPUs at a lower cost than they could before, they are now selling that CPU as a retail model with no heatsink and fan, further reducing their costs and yet they are expecting their customer's to pay more than the previous gen i7 parts despite getting less with it and finally the 6700K is currently being listed at a higher price than the 5820K due to people charging the early adopter premiums that come with a product in high demand and short supply so that doesn't make sense to me at all, a consumer part should never cost more than an extreme processor IMHO.
In terms of performance the 6700K might get slightly higher frame rates in some games but I don't think it would be significantly higher and it would depend largely on the game while the 5820K would be significantly faster at rendering video due to the extra cores/threads.
