    skybridge i5 or i7

    Hi all

So high time I upgraded as I'm one one of the original core 2 duo setups and an old gtx 260

So with this in mind is it worth the extra for the i7 for gaming?

Will be mostly wow and bf4 etc so don't wanna pay out if it's not really necessary

Aiming to put it on an asus pro gaming z170 board

What financial difference there would be? If the financial difference < performance difference, I'd say go ahead. As long as the price is not too high.

Did you had a look at the 2011-v3 platform? Could be a meaningful alternative.

I would say that if going for a i7 then a 5820k on 2011-v3 makes more sense to me.

Also consider a Haswell i5 setup. Almost as fast, particularly if you're not overclocking, but £100 cheaper.

No and the socket 2011 variants are even more not worth it for gaming.

This is likely now outdated info.

There is a clear benefit to i7 on minimum frame rates and smoothness now games are being written with 8 threads on consoles.

Per £ its likely not worth the difference but it is there. if your keeping the chip 4 years then its worth the money all day.

Want to show me the evidence of that, because I haven't seen it yet, even when running with SLI 780s at 1600p (SLI and CFX cause more CPU bottlenecks)

Sure, there may be benchmarks showing minimums of 120 instead of 100....but does that really benefit many people when most are running at 60Hz?

The biggest thing about S2011 right now is that Skylake i7 prices are absurd and the Skylake release has caused a plummeting in DDR4 prices. Meaning 2011 seems MUCH better value now if you really feel the need for an i7. Still for gaming, i7s are over-spec.

    i run 144hz 1440p.

Personally id rather have the threads there as they are now being used. If they make a major difference then i dont know yet.. Reviews are saying they are becoming more used.

I think that over time the threads will become more used, but gaming wise i think there left untouched usually are they not ?
