Skylake or not to Skylake that is the question? Well sort of :)
Hi All
Going to apologise now as I have been out of the PC upgrade business for some time. :shocked2: Been looking to upgrade my PC seeing as I'm still running QX6700 but finding its finally not really able to pull its weight with newer games.
Had been holding out for several months as herd that Skylake was worth the wait, but after reading some of the reviews now that it is out, sounds to be only a minor gradual improvement compared to past gen CPU’s. (Obviously not comparing to my QX6700 :p )
Apart from the fact skylake supports DDR4 and better chipset is it worth the cost? £200 for the i5 and £275 for i7.
I know everyone raves about Intel CPU’s over AMD but have always been told its worth saving your money on the CPU so buying AMD and putting that saving towards a better graphics card? Also with windows 10 having direct x12 and future games being able take advantage of more cores wouldn’t I be better off with an 8 Core AMD CPU rather than just an Intel quad core? I know Intel has stronger single core performance which is great for older games but will I really benefit when you compare bang for buck?
After reading the above you can probably tell I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore as can’t seem to find the time or money , But would like a system that can run newer games smooth without spending the earth. Probably about £450 MAX on CPU, Mobo and RAM
Please help me see the light.

No one can answer worth but yourself.
Unless you have some kind of requirement on high speed peripherals/storage, making any kind of upgrade to a four core intel chip released in the last 3-4 years will be enough to lift you out of any DX11 CPU gaming bottleneck for the foreseeable future, and if going DX12 (no games currently, but hopefully will start to come out) then AMD chips come into play too (note - they are already good enough, but we're talking more or less elimination of any bottleneck).
So best bang for buck would probably be to go to a second hand Intel i5 from sandy bridge/ivy bridge or haswell generations.
Re: Skylake or not to Skylake that is the question? Well sort of :)
id got a second hand intel setup, even as far back as sandy, just watch what u buy, but there are some bargains to be had and u will get very comparable performance

Where would you be buying it 2nd hand as dont really want to buy off ebay. As for buying it brand new there is not much in it when comparing the skylake i5 chip to previous gen?
