    CPU question and random.

Hello Hive mind, out of curiosity I ran an intel processor diagnostic, it showed an expected frequency 3.5Ghz, but an actual frequency of around and above 6GHz(on two tests). I have Smart 6 on my PC and it shows a default of 3.9GHz(allowing me to go as high as 4.68GHz. The only reason it might be high is in Control Panel>Power Option, I have it set on high performance. Is that normal, and if it runs at that frequency, what does it actually mean? Also I have a Fractal case, with a normal press ON button. After definitely being off for about twenty hours, when I entered room PC was switched on and running(I hadn't left it in sleep mode). Do I have a poltergeist, could someone else do that remotely, or random event!

    Re: CPU question and random.

    It's not running at 6GHz.

Your computer will boot up automatically for "maintenance", things like running Windows Update, defragging hard-drives and what no.

You can run from an elevated command prompt: powercfg /lastwake

Sometimes it gives you a hint as to what triggered the boot of your computer. You can change your settings not to start the computer for maintenance if it bugs you (e.g. in your bedroom etc).

Interestingly if I go into Power options and switch to moderate, the diagnostic shows that the estimated and actual frequency are the same 3.5GHz. I was wondering if 6GHz(and it changes slightly each time I run test, apparently indicating that 6GHz is the actual frequency) making the Smart6 redundant. I ran the command prompt, it indicated no startups(and there's no maintenance schedule to start PC), bizarre.

Okay here's a possibility, does a water cooled CPU allow it to run with less resistance through the circuits, giving a higher frequency reading.

    Hi

I have seen similar, check your bios settings and see if you have wake on lan turned on, this can be the cause of random turn on's .

    Cheers

If your CPU is running at 6GHz, your PC will be crashing a lot

Pressing the power button once will sleep the PC nowadays......Windows (and other apps) can decide to turn the PC on at a pre-determined time if it is asleep.....on your NIC setting in device manager you might find that there is a tick box to wake the PC on network activity also.

    Re: CPU question and random.

Thanks for the replies, It was just curiosity really. Has anyone else ran the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool(64bit)? If you do, try changing the Power Options, and see if you get a different result. I'm using an old i7 2700k(PC never crashes, and even with old card ran WD2 at above 60FPS, no problems. Unlike many with higher specs). I also ran the Steam VR test with only an EVGA GTX 780 classified 3GB, and it said it would run medium VR games. I'm waiting to do a new build until some decent VR games come out(interested in VR thread for ideas). One of the fans on my card wouldn't start properly, and EVGA have replaced it with a GTX 1080 6GB which is VR ready(glad I took extended warranty now). I want to get the Vive, but is it still wired(I know there is a wireless adaption), but I was hoping that might become standard, any news on that.
