Hmmm, all things considered it might be worth holding off any purchase until Black Friday anyway in case any good deals come up then....

As I said, he's not much of an overclocker so I'm slightly put off buying him a non-X Ryzen CPU....

Ah, I've already bought the mobo anyway, so that wouldn't've helped.

Can't believe none of the ASUS mATX B350 boards have USB Type C on the back panel. Way to delay adoption, ASUS!

That seems to be the difference between the b350 and X boards... latter come with more usb ports and usb type 3.1.

I went for an ASRock B350 board, mostly for the USB 3.0 Type C on the back panel. Sure it lacks 3.1 Gen 2, but even if my stepson gets some g2 devices they'll still work in Gen 1 ports, so...!

Out of interest did you have any problems with the BIOS firmware? I installed one of the higher spec Ryzen 3 or 5s (can't remember which) and had a nightmare sending the board back over and over till they finally updated the firmware.

I was looking at that board too. It's reasonably priced.

I got one a month ago, attracted by that reasonable price. Good board, in that it hasn't given me any reason to hold a grudge against it.

Haven't even received the board yet, not have I ordered a CPU! A few other people on Hexus have Ryzen builds though, and don't seem to have had any issues like that...

Certain boards actually only supported BR or Ryzen 7 out of the box and not Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5! It was because some of the initial BIOS versions did not support the newer CPUs and why I made sure I stuck with boards where all versions supported the CPUs I paired with the build. The problem is you can't say whether a retailer has gotten stock with the updated BIOS or not.

I suppose I could grab a cheap BR APU just in case - no doubt I could find a use for it afterwards

Interesting to review the specs of the HP laptop, btw. Be interesting to see how those prices translate to the UK. $865 with 8GB RAM and the 256GB SSD might be a bit steep for my wallet...

EDIT: and the memory options are bizzarre ... swap one 4GB SODIMM for an 8GB one for an extra $70, or swap both for an extra $150...? How does that work?
