Corky's link has a benchmark where the 1700X is faster with 2400 ram than with 2933 ram. Modern memory is a bonkersly complex thing.

Could that be down to the change in L2 cache timings, according to wikichips the original Ryzen had a problem where the L2 cache had a higher latency than it was designed to have and Ryzen 2 fixes that (Zen was apparently designed to run at 12 cycles but the original had a problem that caused it to run at 17).

Turbo boost is nice, but AMD really doesn't need so many names for it. The venn diagram looks something like:
- All 2000 ryzens, any board: Precision boost 2
- 2000X ryzens, any board: XFR 2
- 2000X ryzens, 400 board: Precision boost overdrive

The 2400G is not an X chip, so it should get PB2 in any board and no XFR or PBO

Yeah that's a really nice improvement, should help a lot of modern games maybe including your favourite FO4 benchmarks.

But I'm looking at quite an expensive refresh with a switch to DDR4 on a new platform, hence wondering if the 2400G is enough for me. They are quite a decent price atm and I can easily find a use for such a part in the future if I decide to upgrade.

I managed to get hold of 16gb of 2400mhz DDR4 for £56 last year so unless I get a good deal on faster RAM any platform upgrade I do will be using that. Also regarding FO4 the spectre/meltdown mitigations are definitely noticeable with worse minimums with my IB CPU.Having said that Bethesda hasn't patched the game for Ryzen at all despite them being an AMD partner - Starfield might use the same engine though so will see if they CBA with a newer game though.

Yeah,but any platform I get will be bottlenecked by the slowish RAM and yep,FO4 also likes fast RAM and fast storage too. My mate managed to get 3000MHZ DDR4 for not much more,which I wish I had done now!!

Its OK,if you don't push the build system much,but if you do performance starts having issues,and it gets worse when you mod it. It also streams stuff off drives at a low but constant level,which is why the mitigations don't help too(especially if you mod the game). The problem is there are plenty of other games I could play instead,but building and modding is actually quite fun,a bit like Minecraft or KSP,so its kind of nice to play it in a casual way. Plus some of the mods are impressive TBH,even with proper voice acting and some large scale mods which are essentially new maps are being workd on. These are the same level of modders which did stuff like this with Skyrim:

Also,reading through an HUKD thread,PS2 seems to run better on Ryzen than IB,so it looks like its really FO4 which underperforms on Ryzen,so I suspect its really just Bethesda not bothering to patch it. Having said that I might just wait for Ryzen 2 as I would rather get an AMD system. Having said that if Ryzen+ shows good improvements,I might also consider it too.

Having said that TR,apparently tests their Intel systems with all the security updates so at least their tests should be more indicative of a system someone actually owns.

Depends on the motherboard, if you ask the e-tailer to flash to latest BIOS it should work fine out of box reliably
