    Second hand CPU's cost

Why do second hand CPU's seem to go for so much on ebay? I was looking at dropping a i7 4790k into my build so I don't have to change my motherboard. They seem to go for new the same price as when released and second hand is like £250. At those prices I may aswell get a new mboard and CPU probably a ryzen r5.

    1. Raw CPU speeds haven't changed much since Sandy Bridge (Jan 2011)

Well all those sellers live in a different world where Ryzen 5 hasn't been released yet and all the cheaper options are also slower.

It wouldn't surprise me if a Core i7 4790K is still faster than a R5 1600X in a number of games.

Once thing I always liked about AMD was they don't change their socket every 5 minutes

True, but OTH they also have a tendency to aim for "future" performance whilst forgetting many of us are not playing games from the future.

    Re: Second hand CPU's cost

I found ebay rubbish for selling a cpu anyways. 3 times I sold it and 3 times had it returned due to people finding it was incompatible with their board. It was a Skt 2011 Core i7-3930K

    Re: Second hand CPU's cost

The 4790k is pretty much the very best cpu I could put in my board (upgraded from a 4670K i5), so with nothing to beat it without changing your mobo and RAM they seem to hold their value quite well.

What chip are you swapping out?

They also overclock like champs in my experience, had (just) over 5ghz in the winter.

Nothing has really compelled me to upgrade for the last few years, but now Ryzen is out I'm considering upping the core count later this year - not sure which side to go with yet.

Yeah not cheap. Picked up the Intel Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition (LGA1150) for a budget gaming build with the intention of sticking in something meaty when the prices drop, but not really any bargains to be had!

Are you looking at what people ask for, or what things actually sell for? It's not unknown for people to have unrealistic expectations of what things are worth.

On the other hand, things are worth what you can get someone to stump up for them. I.e. basic law of supply v. demand. Demand can be pretty small, but if supply is even smaller, price will go up in any normal marketplace. Somewhere like ebay, you only really need to have one more bidder than available items and if they really want it ....

That is to say, shaithis is probably right with 2.

No I've been watching what they sell for. I have an i3 so I would get a boost for sure, just seems like they go for too much considering an i7700k or r7 1700 can be had new for not much more. I guess a lot of people like me don't want to change their mboard and ram.

Do you guys trust second hand CPUs? I have heard of lots of horror stories. You haven no way of knowing if the previous owner aggressively overclocked it, if they kept it cool enough, etc. At those sort of prices, wouldn't a new Mobo and processor be a safer option?

Second hand CPUs seem to be way too overpriced and you don't know what the previous owner has done with it. Have they kept it cool enough? Have they pushed it too far on overclocking? I have always been a bit weary.

    Re: Second hand CPU's cost

second hand prices do seem to be going up with most desirable parts as the new prices are all creeping up.

I bought a used 5960x for 525 off fleabay about 8-9 months ago then sold it for 575 4 months ago ? (was no better for my usage so i went back to my trusty 5820k)

and now your lucky to find one under 600.....
