Higher than usual recent CPU temps

For the past 3-4 weeks my SCAN built PC has been showing higher than usual temperatures when idling. It will usually idle at around 40c or so but recently has been as high as low 60c's - it's currently showing as 62c as I'm typing. Some days it will be in the low 50c's and two days ago it was down to almost normal - around 44c.

I can't think of any other odd behaviour other than the lighting on my Corsair Strafe keyboard sometimes not coming on when booting up PC but that's about it. I keep it pretty clean and dust-free. I contacted SCAN as it's still under warranty (I've had it about 18 months) and they asked me to run Aida64 stress test. I ran it for 4 hours with CPU temps between 60 & 89, average 80.5c

SCAN suggested at first it could be the thermal paste that needed replacing & I'd agreed to send the system back to them for checking. However when I arranged the return I got a call back suggesting that as the CPU was not overheating/crashing under load, it isn't a fault so although they're happy to get the system back and do what they can to reduce the temperature they can't guarantee that they will be able to do so.

I therefore decided to give it a week or so to see what happens. As the problem still persists I guess I should return it? Surely it should not be idling at 60c? In the meantime is there anything else I can do/check to try to see what's causing the recent increase in temperature?

Re: Higher than usual recent CPU temps

Probably obvious things that you have already checked and discounted, but I'll suggest them just in case:

Any programmes/services showing in task manager that you hadn't realised were running (thus making it not as idle as you thought it was)?

Are all of the case fans still fully working?

Have you had the central heating on more due to weather getting worse?

Re: Higher than usual recent CPU temps

What software are you using to show the temps?

OC'd my i5-6600K to 4.5Ghz and on idle, I'm sure it's no higher than 30oC.

Re: Higher than usual recent CPU temps

What is the cooler that you have? Sometimes dust can accumulate in a thin film between fan and heatsink which could possibly be overlooked from a cursory glance (depending on cooler design).

Any funny noises coming from the fan? Cooler definitely looks as though it's seated OK - no obvious unevenness/there's no way it could have been moved or jolted recently?

Re: Higher than usual recent CPU temps

Apologies for not replying sooner, been away for week

Software used to check temps - Corsair Link and also temp LED on Mobo.

Cooler is a Corsair H110i GTX water cooler. No funny noises or excessive dust anywhere.

Sorry, given in re: central heating - it's gone on today

I think back to Scan to check it over is the next course of action ....

Re: Higher than usual recent CPU temps

I have the H80iV2 and when my cpu temps were on the up and up I found a layer of dust sandwiched between the fan nearest the cpu and the radiator (mine is arranged to blow air out of the case).
This is despite external vacuuming every month.
It's not easy to see because of the fan rotating and not easy to clean out without removing all 4 screws attaching the fan to the radiator. :-(
You need a really bright torch to look in past the fan blades at just the right angle to see it.
P.S. I have cats, your mileage may vary. :-)

Re: Higher than usual recent CPU temps

That's definitely not normal, I'd certainly take it back to have a check...
