Also after a few years the thermal compound or pad used can get a bit flaky,so replace that.

    Edit!!

That model is under 3 years old?? Surely there is some warranty left??
nope, only got the 1 year for budget reasons. (outlet special). Annoying as it developed a dead pixel last month.

    Not insured under home insurance??

    Is it this model:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-X....153376.0.html

If the fan is fubared, you can get replacements:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_o...xps13&_sacat=0
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Computers...&_nkw=9350+fan

Looking at this listing it does look like a direct chip contact cooler:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-XPS-....c100505.m3226

You can import the whole assembly from China apparently.

it's not totally bust, but way noisier than it used to be. I left the thing upside down one night when charging as I was worried about leaving it on a thick carpet and not getting enough airflow (the fans kick in when charging!!!) Ever since it makes much more noise in use (unless I tip it upside down again when the sound disappears) most annoying. So presumably the fan bearings did not like being upside down.

Might be worth seeing if dust has gotten stuck in the area the impeller is mounted to the motor. Sometimes it can get jammed up that area.
