    Switching from 2500k to 8700k - This cant be right?

    On idle in W10 the CPU usage stays around 15%, the temps range from 45c to 57c but the issue I see is that the CPU clock stays at ~4300MHz with a core voltage constantly 1.1v to 1.2v!!!!!

    When stress testing the CPU never goes over 77c which I'm OK with as my cooler isn't great. But what's up with the clock speed???

    MB - MSI Z370 PRO
    No OC'ing
    Power Plan is Balanced

    But why is the clock speed constantly maxed and not reducing along with the voltage when not in use?

    After an hour of just at the 4300Mhz it starts to do this:



    Constantly spiking with every tick. Is that normal for a 8700k?

    You've got a process wasting CPU time that's keeping the CPU at max clocks. Use task manager to find out which process it is. Advice on what to do after that depends on what the process is.

    15% is approx 1/6th of the whole 6-Core CPU's grunt. i.e. you have a process with 1 thread using close to 100% of that thread

    This. And it's extremely common for an update/virus scan/MS compatibility scan/etc. to be going on for a very long time if the computer is new or you haven't used it for a while.

    Sorry I read your question wrong as I was on the phone - I thought you were talking about the boost not being higher. 4.3GHZ is the all core Turbo state:

    Try booting into safe mode and see what clockspeeds the system runs at??

    Edit!!

    Have you tried checking whether MCE is enabled in the BIOS(or something akin to that) as it is a form of auto overclocking.

    I have just skimmed the above and it's possible you do have a process that's being all wappy and you didn't spot it before because you didn't look (although the sluggishness might have led you to believe that you needed to upgrade).

    I'd do the following, assuming you be on Windaz 10:
    1) Open task manager
    2) Click the App History tap
    3) Order by CPU time
    4) Anything stand out?

    Also you can go to the Process tab and order by CPU % by clicking on it and it'll show you whatever is using the most CPU.

    Also worth looking to see if there's anything using a shed load of memory.

    If this doesn't reveal a rogue process then it's worth looking in the BIOS and maybe just resetting it all to defaults and autoness.

    Beyond this, I suggest a hammer.

    A number of Intel Z370 boards have MCE on as standard which auto overclocks the CPU to one of the Turbo states, and that might also lead to the CPU becoming stuck at boost clockspeeds and not down clocking IIRC. Hence I would definitely check the BIOS too.

    Safe mode would mean things like AV won't be initiated in the first place.
