The I7 9700K is almost exactly the same price as the I7 8700K (currently £8 of a difference on pcpartpicker, £384 vs £376) and the i5 9600k is £250 so if the price was similar either the i7 8700k is a steal at £250 or you're being ripped off with the i5 9600k being £384.
I can only talk about the 8700K and it has been a fantastic CPU, overclocking to 5GHz with ease at a fairly low vcore and with the extra threads just powers through all gaming and workload related activities.
As above the 9600K should be much cheaper than the 8700K and if price is an issue and it is purely for gaming then the money saved on the 9600K would be the better bet as it should also overclock very well. If money is not an issue, then the 8700K is one hell of a good CPU....and for me just shades the 9700K...
If you're just intending to play games, the i5 9600K looks like a good choice, it's ~£100+ cheaper than the i7 8700K but keeps up with it fairly well. That's £100+ you can use elsewhere if your budget needs it.
