With Zen2 on the way I was just wondering now if Intel is even a option for consideration should I want to upgrade my cpu. My pc is rapidly becoming more productivity all rounder than a gaming machine it was primarily.

you've got a Xeon right? From 2014?
Intel make some lovely clock speed cpu's and they're decided to sell a few without extra threads to keep the gaming scene happy.
But AMD Ryzen's are quite astonishing. Not just in value terms.. but overall performance.
And Threadrippers are fearsome on productivity based jobs
TBH a Ryzen 2700 with a big Noctua or bequiet! air cooler on it, on a nice board with 32gig of DDR4 might just blow your socks off!

give that a try.. see what your current CPU scores and compare with some others
My work PC is a Ryzen 1700X 3.4ghz and it scores 3445 every time. V consistent

(That said, I like SFF PCs based on ITX boards and that tends to limits the CPU range available.)

Yes I am also a SFF fan my current xenon from 2014 chugs along but would be nice for more grunt. I don't see the 10nm from intel being available this year. Sometimes with Zen the sff market is not as wide ranging as intel at least in mboard selection.
My i7 PC has served me well for many years with its X980 CPU. I'm currently looking for a new Intel-based laptop gaming system for security reasons as well as getting more performance. I'll keep the old system for day to day use but am looking forward to the increased processing power. I've always had Intel based systems and am not really interested in chaging that.
That's a very good point.
Of course, it all depends on what you're going to be upgrading from. I had a 3rd Gen i5-3570k and now have a 9th Gen i7-9700K. I mean, my PC wasn't a slouch or anything, but it's now blisteringly fast.
Teamed up with a 1TB Samsung 970Evo NVMe m.2 drive and it's almost instantaneous. Should keep me going for another 7 years
