    Skylake G4400 upgrade to i3 8100 or Ryzen 5 2600 for son's PC

Looking for advice into upgrade my sons current Skylake G4400 to either a i3 8100 or Ryzen 5 2600 ?

He's just starting to get into PC gaming ( Rainbow 6 Seige) and has the spec below.

    G4400 Pentium (skylake)
    8GB DDR4
    250gb SSD
    1TB HDD
    GTX 1060 3GB

obviously any update will involve cpu & motherboard, any thoughts on the upgrade welcome.

Why? If you can find a i7 6700/7700 for sub £120 you have yourself something more than capable at beating both of them, though there is no upgrade after that. However If going new board n' cpu get the 2600, but again, you could wait as in less than 2 months zen 2 is out as a replacement for the 2000 series. SO IMO if he want's a quick replacement, get a athlon 200ge and a b450 board so he can drop a better cpu in after they all com out.

The Pentium on this chart is 4 thread, but it looks like Rainbow 6 shouldn't be that bothered by CPU?

Agree though that of the two options I would go Ryzen 2600 (I personally went 2600X) but either option might make Windows demand a new licence key if you are on OEM Windows because of the motherboard swap. For that alone, I would be tempted to look up what the existing motherboard can take and see what I could find.

Edit: Looking at some Intel pricing, I would be tempted to just go the 2600 route.

In the "cheap" intel family, only 9400F have good price / power. But wait for Ryzen 3*** series, sellers probably make big discount for older CPU, 2600 too. Is he make something else that gaming, like streaming or 3d Graphic? if not, chose rather 9400F (or wait for new Ryzens). If yes, Ryzen is Better choice.

If you don't want to waste big money on the system I guess the R52600 is the best choice. They are also offering some bundle deals for the 2nd Gen Ryzen. If you spend more money than get a R53600 or i5-9400F. Plus Can I get the RAM spec as if you want to reuse the ram i want to see if it will be compatible or not.

I know this is late, but consider an i5 - you can get a 6500 or 6600 for ~£100 on ebay, and it'll run rings around the pentium at a much lower price than a new motherboard
