    Core upgrade and a case

A Ryzen 7 2600x seems to be where the smart money goes.

I've been running an i53570k for such a long time.
I think it needs to retire to nice cozy Plex server.

I have a 1070 with a target of 1440p and my CPU has been bottlenecking and I can imagine that's only going to get worse.

Not in the market for a new GPU anytime soon. Let's see what next gen rtx does.

    So.

I'm still seeing intel single core performance out performing AMD.
This ivy bridge chip has done me proud, price performance and longevity.

What's the best option for a motherboard to overclock a Ryzen? Not wanting extreme clocking, just the free bump you get with the X series.
Not had AMD since an old 900mhtz chip which means I'm all at sea. B350? 450?
    Is ddr4 really that good?

I'm a dad gamer so I want my precious game time to be a shiny as possible but it is not something I can justify dropping 2grand on CPU/GPU.

Terse, brief state of play would be appreciated.

Wait for Zen 2 - it's only weeks away.

2600X is currently quite cheap, probably because the 3000 series is so close to release.
Expect to spend a bit on the motherboard to get decent VRMs. I went X470 chipset (on an Asus X470 Pro) mostly for this reason, a B450 should have done.
We are expecting 500 series chipsets & motherboards to turn up with the 3000 series cpus.
Rumour says 500 series will be an AMD designed chipset, not the ASmedia outsourced stuff in the current AM4 boards. Time will tell if that is a bonus or a risk of new bugs in early boards.
I'm not sure how good you expect DDR4 to be, but you need some to make the CPU work Try and get at least 3000MHz rated, after that there isn't much performance gain for the extra money.

Here is a nice little vid showing how different ddr4 speeds can affect gaming :-
