So how does PBO scale with CPU cooler effectiveness? (also AMD stock cooler review)

No I hadn't spotted the max was coming. Looks like I've missed out on some extreme ram speed settings ( I thought Ryzen slowed the infinity fabric if you went above 3600mhz anyway?) And usb 3.2 Vs 3.1. I've only gone for 3200mhz ram and don't really have much usb 3.0 stuff so doesn't seem a big compromise... It was £110 as an damaged box deal which seemed ok.

Still struggling not to go after market for cooling. Just so use to my hyper 212 giving me a boost. Seems weird how little a decent cooler gives you with ryzen...

Not really. Most of the box coolers are really very good, so what's weird is how much the heat pipe box coolers on the high end parts are worth. The 3600 would probably benefit more than most from an upgrade though.

Yeah. Kicking myself as I saw a barely used Wraith Prism RGB for £13 on Amazon. Was thinking about it (and what paste to get) or whether to get a new one for £20 with paste... Saw several reviews stating AMD put too much paste on new coolers so thought I'd go used and it was gone... No rush though. I'll stick with stock for now. Should be easy to change later. Thankfully my fairly new s340 has good rear access to the motherboard so it'll be easy to fit a back plate later (unlike my old case).

You can change the infinity fabric on zen2. What ram did you get? Hours of fun ociing the ram. If you use aliexpress the snowman range is meant to be OK for about £10.

There are a surprising number of am4 brackets available if you can reuse your current cooler.

I've got the 16Gb DDR3 versions (no RGB though) and they've been rock solid (and I was able to match when I went 2 to 4 sticks a few years later). There may well be faster kits out there but the height of these looks pretty good. The snowman is about £15 now following the pound tanking so figured I might as well as well get something known from Amazon for £20~25 and get better support... I haven't found any Am4 brackets that mention compatibility with the Hyper 212 (And the official kit is £15 from Germany mostly due to postage) - Got any ideas?

The coolers I have used seem to use the backplate that came with the motherboard, just unscrew the old AM3 style blocks off the top and screw on the new heatsink. OFC the backplate falls off the moment you undo the last screw... :D

The am4 brackets for the 212 are completely sold out :(. No ideas; you're on top of everything.

I have the previous design ones and I am pretty sure they are the same die - micron rev-E. You can check with thaiphoon burner. If they are, you must OC your ram to at least 3600. This is not optional :)

I think the 212 has a fix bracket so would need a matching top bracket. Think I'm out of luck with the 212 (see Domestic_ginger's comment).

I think mine are identical model number but with L on the end for RGB (Couldn't resist). I'll see what I can do - I might have to wait a week or two to build it.

So the damaged box Gaming pro carbon turned out to have thermal paste all around the socket. It was just sold as 'damaged box' with minor damage to accessories. Turns out this means the IO shield was mangled. I've always done pretty well out Amazon warehouse (And there returns are good when they do go wrong) but not this time. It'll be on it way back when I can drop it off. Gone for a new MSI Gaming Plus Max which only lose some RGB, Wifi, worse sound/lan but gains on RAM speeds and USB 3.2 support and suits my red highlighted case. I suspect the power delivery isn't quite so good but my 3600 will only by OC'd via PBO as covered by this post originally so no biggy. (It only has one 8 pin CPU power socket, The carbon had 8+4 pin!). Its amazing how much components are shooting up at the moment and how little is in stock at Amazon. I'll not mention my build further on this thread to avoid hijacking it further but looking forward to playing with PBO!

Only the x versions do pbo. I checked my post, I hope there was no confusion.

Ah that's interesting. Everything review I read said get the 3600 - The 3600x is just a' 200Mhz up clock' that you can get with PB and a slightly better cooler. Nothing mentioned PBO would be disabled for the non-x. It was another £40 for the X version currently so really not worth it even with PBO. Hopefully I can tweak the 3600 a little. Its still a big upgrade on the i5 3470k!

Most reviews also say don't bother with PBO. I certainly haven't felt like bothering.

My 3600 turned up yesterday for the VR rig. Half Life Alyx went from a fairly constant 95% CPU on the 2200G to 25% spread fairly evenly across all cores. It had the same cooler as the 2200G, so I left that in the box and re-used the existing one. I have better wraith coolers sat around but that is a showbox PC so I don't think any will fit.

I can't believe this is their entry level CPU, it really is quite bonkers. I'm sure you will love it.

I'm sure I will. From the sound of it a decent cooler gives a better PB than PBO but still only a few percentage points better. Sounds like I'm sorted on the CPU front for a good few years. Does sound like AMD have wrung all they can out of the chips but have throw enthusiasts things like PBO to keep us busy trying to get a few more points on a benchmark. I might well get a Spire Prism RGB but only because it looks good. My case is windowed on my desk so I might as well make it look the part but doesn't sound like I'll change performance much.

The VRM will be fine - it has the same VRM as B450 Tomahawk Max,but only thing is the VRM heatsink is smaller,which is probably more of a concern with higher end AMD CPUs.

Hopefully they are Micron E-die. The two best types of RAM modules for Ryzen are Samsung B-die and Micron E-die.
