5600x vs 3700x vs 3900x

Hi

I am trying to work out what CPU to go for, my x370 board has had 2 memory slots go bad, so to go to a new board b550 my x1700 is not compatible.

This means I am going to go to a 3rd or 5th gen Ryzen and a b550 board.

What would you recommend of the three cpu choices? the workload is occasional gaming, Adobe suite (indesign, photoshop, illustrator). Currently have 32GB DDR4 3000mhz ram and an rx580 gpu.

Budget for CPU is likely £350, if a 5800x is a monster choice, might stretch the budget.

I don't think a 5800X would bring any significant benefit to you considering your usage so it sounds like a 5600X is perfect for you. Unless you can find an amazing deal for 5800X that brings it within your budget.

Thought about going for an X470 board instead? Would then support the 1700x and still leave room for going 3000 or 5000 series cpus at a later date, especially when the 5000 series has better availability. I know you give up PCIe Gen4 but depends if you care about that.

amazon had some 5800X for £385 earlier today. You can watch on discord same as for GPUs. If your primary aim is gaming then by all accounts 5600X and 5800X not that dissimilar in performance. I'd go 5600X or 5900X if you can afford it. Nothing in between. The 3900x is a good versatile multi-thread CPU but single thread not as good as for 5000 series and no resizable BAR either.

Gaming also favours the 5000 series. More cores is always better, and there is a chance a 5800X might last longer, but I expect a 5600X will do you just fine.

A few things. Many photographers use laptops,and not even the latest ones. Most modern 6C and 8C CPUs will be easily faster than those,so unless the OP is really doing huge amounts of PS,then perhaps something cheaper will do. Also don't ignore the Intel options either!

Ryzen 5 3600/Intel Core i5 10400F/Core i5 10600KF

2.)£200~£30

Ryzen 7 3700X/Ryzen 5 5600X/Core i7 10700F/Core i7 10700KF

3.)£300~£400

Ryzen 7 5800X/Ryzen 9 3900X/Core i9 10850K

Any of these will be fine for the most part IMHO,and I would concentrate as much on a decent amount of RAM,and fast enough storage.

That deal had the Ryzen 7 5800X effectively at around £370(£500 in total) and was available until a day or two ago IIRC,so it might be worth waiting for stock. However,you will need to budget for a CPU cooler too.

I would go for the 5600x of your 3 listed choices, although if you wanted to save a bit of money without losing out on much performance some of the cheaper options cat-the-fifth listed would be better from a performance/cost ratio

I have seen 5800x from currys clearance on ebay that are brand new, going for £320ish, so if you fancy that you could look out for one

If they really go for that low, then yes get the 5800x, if not 5600x is an excellent choice.

i would say go for the 5600x, i was personally hunting for a 5900x but they are evidentily made out of unicorns so i picked up a 5800x. its lightyears ahead of my old 6700k but does run hot. hovers around 85* under a cinebench multi core run with thermal grizzly on a dark rock pro 4. paid about 365 for it via a one time use discount code which made it more palatable.

Even if Zen3 is slightly faster,it isn't really worth the large price increase IMHO. Even the chart shown in this thread shows this!

Also,another thing is that both Zen2 and Zen3 seem to benefit a bit more than Intel,when it comes to having higher speed DDR4. So,unless the OP wants to buy some new DDR4,their 3000MHZ kit will probably not be ideal especially for Zen3.

Plus reading some of the earlier replies,I agree maybe getting a new motherboard makes more sense ATM. DDR5 is coming out late this year/early next year so maybe its worth also investing into whatever new Intel or AMD platform is out then??

I do agree that some of the Intel CPUs make sense money wise, I do have a moral objection to Intel business practices that usually puts me off buying them. I think the only additional usage pattern that I haven't mentioned as it is something relatively new, is that my Wife also uses Premiere for video editing time to time and wants to do this more, where more cores like the 5800x will definitely help.

Also Currys had some damaged boxed Ryzen 7 5800X CPUs going for a bit less. So if you shop around there are deals on the Ryzen 7 5800X,unlike the Ryzen 5 5600X street pricing which is over £300!! The Ryzen 9 3900 non-X bundles have been going for as low as £400 with an X470/B450 too. Mate got one of the latter bundles and it works a treat for their video work.

would be easy to assume the damaged 5800x were all returns, they shipped mine in just a jiffy bag, the box was squished all to hell. chips was thanks thankfully

Managed to get a bundle on AWD-IT so it was pretty good pricing wise. The 5600X we saw were all £325 or higher so it was not a good deal at the moment.
