Cryptominers to put a squeeze on CPUs (especially Ryzens)?

It's not exactly a surprise given how they've already done it to GPUs and HDDs, but it's still unpleasant news to hear that miners are likely to apply their get-rich-quick scheme to CPUs soon.

While this doesn't affect me as I'm sure I'll be happy with my existing 3950X for much longer, it does of course suggest that anyone who is thinking of going for something new (in particular Ryzens) might want to think about how soon they take the plunge.

How profitable it actually is given current power prices I've no idea, but I still wouldn't be surprised if it's still cheap enough for it to be worth it to someone somewhere in the world.

Hopefully the price of cpu's won't go up too much!

Well the Chia HDD one didn't really last. Once enough people jumped on, the profits slumped. Fingers crossed this works out the same

Seems my second pc with a E5 2680 v3 might be good for this + I don't pay electricity where it is and it could do with a heater. What do I have to lose?

If you are expecting to run a fan heater anyway, then I think it negates most of the ethical arguments against.

It seems like the suppliers want this to happen and the normal man on the street will all be on Laptops soon

In this case it will genuinely offset using electric heaters for less time/power. ie one heater down one power level will offset the PC, generally I am against cryptos on the environmental point but at least for the winter I can justify it. The question is if if the crypto will become viable I very much doubt a couple of early RTM will make me a millionaire but values could increase with enough speculation (aren't all cryptos speculation?).

I have wondered if some mass manufacturer would stick an embedded system in the gubbins of a fan heater. Presumably there's still some kind of return on investment after accounting for a cellular connection etc.

There was a crypto radiator made once, for heating your room.

I think the plan is to nab all the chips and price everyone else out of the market, so that only those already mining crypto can afford computer kit - Without computers, corporations will fall, the world's economy will collapse, and only those who make chips, who mine on chips and who already control 95% of the world (Amazon, Google, Facebook, etc) will be left living above poverty......

    Waitrose had them on sale.

Interesting to note that tinfoil actually amplifies the stuff you think it blocks!

I bought an RTX 3060 a couple of months ago at a vastly inflated price (£429 for a card that should really be ~£300 at this point in the cycle)
I was happy. Then I realised my office was getting colder as winter gets closer. I decided to get back the amount I have overpaid for my card. My old PC has my old RX580 in it, I now have a warm office that I don't need to switch the heather on for! (It's in a garden but extremely well insulated)

I now have a GFX card that's more than enough for any games I play, a warm office and £80 worth of ether in less than a month's worth of mining. Power cost is less than £25 even ignoring the savings on heating.

I still think the whole thing is a complete load of bollards though.

This coin has a trading volume of $515,000 per 24 hours compared to bitcoins $40 billion in 24 hours this coin will not move the needle one bit on the cpu market

That won't happen right now. But the moment it gets any bit of scale then CPU prices are going to skyrocket the same way GPU's have. On a more positive note, most coins seem to be moving away from "mining" and are now going to proof of stake.

Hopefully though the coin won't catch on and gets drowned out by the countless other coins in existence and fails to make a dent.

When you see loads of used cards landing on the market, that's when things might swing towards CPU's as all these farms will want to get best money for their used cards, but given the power of CPU's by comparison, I really cant see it, there will always, at least for the foreseeable future be PoW coins that can be mined on GPU's..
