    Technical Stuff.

This week I finally decided to change my main desktop to a AMD CPU - just to make a change, historically I have always used Shuttles and Intel CPUs.

The new system I built was simple - it doesn't have to store data, more so it has to be fast - so an AMD64 939, ATi ST20G5 Shuttle, X800XT, 74GB Raptor - and without doubt it is fast and quiet, however never bother to overclock - it causes a pain - I will take the nForce4 Shuttle for a spin soon to try that out.

Long term I will build a system around an 840 Intel CPU running on 955 to see how this works out, as with everything - I just need a stable system which runs quickly.

I also upgraded my home network to a 54G Wifi configuration - something which has been on the cards for a while, and finally has been done. I also fixed a small problem I had with my PDC and Exchange box - removing them from DHCP and forcing domain suffixes made logins lightening fast, and also exchange sync quick too.

Nice to see you've come to the "dark side"

I've swapped and changed between CPU makers like god knows what in my past. From AMD to Intel to Cyrix ( remember them !!!! ) to Intel and to AMD and then to AMD again. Personally I'll use ANY processor as long as it's faster than what I have when it comes to upgrade time and is ideal for what I need to use them for.

Thing is - I have always used Intel purely because it was easier - I don't mind what is in my system as long as it works, thats the important bit.

I have a fair few Intel systems now - infact for my Exchange box that is an Intel P4 3.6

I am not a fan of either group - I want them to keep fightin

I've always build Intel systems for some corporate clients of mine, because they needed stability. But I was working for Maplin at the time and the clients wanted to buy from there. Had 4 faulty motherboards and 3 gfx card blow up on me.

But everything is smooth now, not heard a peep from them for 4months straight.

    Shame you won't be overclocking.

I have very little need to overclock - but it is nice to try.

Nah, overclocking is a fad. It's a measurement for your virtual 'goods' if you know what i mean

I've never really touched Intel, i'm just naturally attracted to AMD. Did you go from a desktop to a Shuttle?

I don't overclock that much - at the moment, I have my Barton running fairly slow (compared to what it can do) simply because there's no point running it any faster. As for brand, I've always gone for AMD once I actually got interested in computers (thanks in no small part to Hexus!) They just seemed to represent better value than the Intel equivalents, and now are more powerful than Intel (in gaming at least). I would like Intel to come up with something new that can give AMD a run for its money - at the moment, they just seem to building hotter and hotter chips that simply can't match the Athlon 64s.

I think the value is high - however, with the new releases coming from Intel - and I have played with Yonah it is going to change the ways slightly.

What I can't stand is fan boys - go for the best price/performance guys - then you don't lose.
