Basically, you can run the Asterisk server on any hardware with at least 256MB ram and a 500MHz processor.... the more calls or encoding you're doing, the more CPU you need.

Then, basically, connect it to a switch and off you go, plug in any SIP compatible IP phone and bob's your uncle

A VOIP provider like Gradwell or VoipTalk will sort you for the service... note the best way to do it is to get an IAX compatible provider as you get rid of all issues with firewalls etc

    Has anyone tried Voipcheap?

I use a normal BT DECT phone hooked through a
    USB-B2k (www.yealink.com)

Calls to uk landlines and many countries are free (once you register for £5 -which is all calling credit, you also get a free incoming number, which was local to my area) and you can still use the BT DECT for regular or voip calls.

I am using Skypeout and have to say thats it great. Since my wife and I moved to Vancouver it has saved us alot of money calling the UK and now Skype Beta has video calling too. I believe that this is going to become a very hotly contested industry and within a few years we will see some cool new tech coming out.

Are you using G711A ? (sometimes known as PCMA)

You need to be using this, as all other codecs strip out too much to be able to send fax data.

You may be better looking at the voip wiki

Speaking from experience, its T38 for faxes not G 7.11 Alaw.

That's the codec used to communicate between the fax machines, yes, but Alaw is one of the only codecs over VOIP that the fax transmission can sit inside without degrading

Depends what rate you are trying to push the fax in/out at. T38 handshaking should account for an acceptable speed. G711alaw is only the layer 1 protocol. Its far more complicated as i'm sure you appreciate than, Yes or No.
