    VoIP

Recently I have been harping on at people to give me a solution - not a technology. Meaning we can all guess that things can be streamed over the 'net, for example music, content etc, infact why hasn't someone done Video Phone streaming via the Internet? Anyhow - finally someone came out with a VoIP solution 2 years ago - called 'Skype' and well, it rocks.

I have been using Skype since launch (roughly) whenever I travel. It has been easy since I use an IBM X31 (Centrino Notebook) on the road, which has an inbuilt mic and speakers - so no need to plug myself in. Around 18 months ago, I decided to try Skype Out - so I duely loaded E20 on to the program thinking nothing of it, and hoping it would help save me heaps on my mobile bill when travelling. I have to say it performed well - very well.

So the question is, why don't I install it on my desktop and run it there too? Well, the main issue is that I don't want to be forced to be plugged in to use it - I don't want to *have* to sit by my system, since when on the phone I like to wander around the place and avoid the PC as a distraction. This is something you can't do if you are plugged in to it!

A week or so ago I bought a Skype 'in' number and also setup Skype voicemail - so wherever I am in the world people can call me via a UK based land line number. Also if I am out of the office and just on my mobile people can call via Skype and I can call forward them to my mobile.

But, this doesn't solve the problem about being plugged in to the PC - last week I ordered the most awesome gadget I have had in a while - and trust me I have had a few. It turned up yesterday and unlike me, I got it open and ripped it out of the packaging, and got it up and running.

Sure enough up and running in minutes - finally a viable solution which is easy to install, configure and get working. It's just like using a normal land line, but with more functionality - I can scroll through my Skype contacts and simply call them.

However, yesterday I discovered that another solution is coming to market, which looks even more promising - and we will be opening that up to all you guys too.... But towards the end of the week…..

VoIP is fine, but until we have a unified system i still view this as of limited use. Its still on the fringes and for a change its the consumer market thats ahead of the business market.

I'd really like to see someone put a stake in the ground with a proper IP based phone network so we can truely start to see VOIP take off properly, in the business market as well as the consumer network.

Fingers crossed with my work i'll be able to position myself to develop some call stuff when it does eventually happen

    SOLUTION= perfection.

I think about it weekly. The context can be irrelevent as to VoIP or not.

I want a one box thingy. It must do what it says on the tin, with zero effort, and offer me things I didnt even know I wanted.

It's not upgradeable to a major extent, cos it already does what I purchased it for.

To me the ultimate SOLUTION would be an online game in a box. IL-2 in a box, that plugs into my router, and screen, and works.

Period. Nothing else. Plug in. Fly online. Win.Lose, Unlpug, put away til next time.

    OK, back on track! sorry

The range is not far enough - I like to wander. Also I want to have all calls cheaper and have a *real phone*

I agree - Skype is only useful with Skype out for example. I suspect BT will launch something next year which will make something exciting - but the cost of a real IP phone is too high until everyone is on it - this way it semi converges both technologies

Games consoles fix that for you... but your right.

I think it needs to be a device which just works.

Games condoles won't fix it for me sadly as they are too .... commerical!

A Game Cube sized box, for just ONE game, hard coded into the chips and flash upgradeable BY THE MANUFACTURER automatically.

It does one job. One alone. And works. Permanently.

Same hardware for everyone, no ability to cheat. Same rules. Across the globe.

    Would be ACE

    Gizmondo is closest I reckon!

Yeah, but the costs involved would be humongous. Look how expensive something as simple as those atari things are, now imagine trying to put the power of a 1500 quid gaming pc into a box that small at a price point thats acceptable

The trouble is it has to be commercial to hit mainstream, and a solution is something targetted at Mainstream.

Meaning the closest thing is the Phantom Concept (note I didn't say console!)

Heh - VoIP is going to revolutionise communication

I've just got my VoIP sorted. All I need now is a cordless SIP protocol based handset and I'll be rocking and only using my BT line for the ADSL

Tonight I'll be able to call mobiles for a fraction BT charge me just by simply using a SIP phone or even my PC (with the software installed) and headset.

BT and the other telco's must be quakin' in their boots

I have just setup an entire VOIP system at the office here.

We moved office and were sharing our old phones with the PBX from the company down the other end of the offices.

I have now setup an Asterisk server (see http://www.asterisk.org or http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk)

Got the whole thing setup using an Asterisk@Home install disk. We have a spare 1.5GHz machine in the office, so we decided to use it
    http://asteriskathome.sourceforge.net/

Popped the disk in and off we went. Setup a couple of trunks along with some IP -> PSTN providers and plugged in my IP phones.

We're using Grandstream GXP-2000 IP phones which support up to 4 lines each and can be connected straight via your router to the SIP provider (eg: http://www.sipgate.co.uk) or via an Asterisk box, like our office, as we have call groups, voicemail and music on hold

All in all, we've saved a fortune and have a fully functional PBX system that has cost less to implement than a static ISDN solution and saves us a fortune
