Best bet is to go somewhere where they have a whole bunch of them. Your eyes will tell you what they like.

Mate has an LG 22" and its beautiful. He does however have the required hardware to run games on it. I've got a 1680x1050 screen in my laptop, and for work at least, it is perfect. (X1300 struggles in games, however).

So, if work is mainly what it is for, then 22" is a very good buy. For games, it is still a good buy, just make sure you have the hardware to drive it.

Hope this helps,
hmm spose this "mate" of yours wouldn't likely to be me??

and i dont consider you a mate.... i consider you a guy who comes and drools at my pc...!! na only kiddin

btw, if u pop into asda, u can get a decent acer 19inch screen for £100..... could get 2 of em?
i jus got one myself!!!

Re: 22 inch monitors

I picked up an Optiquest (Viewsonic no frills) 20" widescreen for $185 after rebate. It seems pretty good to these old eyes. OTOH I don't have a more expensive one to compare against.

Re: 22 inch monitors

Those bargain ones can be worth thinking about. The thing is with cheaper ones, like that Asda 19" or that no frills 20" one, atleast you are getting a bargain. So even if it doesn't end up being the best screen in the world, atleast you didn't pay a fortune on it. I sometimes work on a really cheap one, and it does the job fine. It has some backlight bleed and stuff, but if you've only spent like £70 or so, you can't complain. (well you can.. but I don't.).

What I hope people can avoid though, is spending a lot of money on something that is meant to be mid-high end, and then getting something you aren't happy with. That is just painful =( I experienced that earlier this year but got sorted in the end.

I have got to say though, my preference would be to a 20" Dell with the S-IPS(?) panel, partly for the extra inputs, and partly because I'm currently used to 1680x1050 on a 15.4" screen - so everything else seems huge...
Thanks =) And now ya talkin! Those dells are really good. There are some kinds of them that evidently have the odd problem (like the 2407 HC -- or something like that? -- has a ghosting issue I think), and the odd other ones have the odd other problems (one had a well known banding problem, but I think they might have fixed that now). But generally, they seem to be a very good choice. One of the best. I think there are a couple of screens which are better, but not much better. And the Dell ones tend to have good prices.

p.s. I once talked to a professional graphic designer whose work ends up those big billboards around town, and he uses apple cinema screens as his first choice, but he said the Dells are his second choice. And he owns both - one of each.

Read about the TN panels part way down...the Gray to Gray approach to response times, the marketing hype....etc

I dont always believw Wiki, but it's not a bad description on the 6bit to 8bit issue
