Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
Hey guys,
Was just wondering, apart from some inputs, TV tuners built into TV's, panels used and pixel pitch (may (depending on what type of TV/monitor) what are the main differences between the 2?
Oh also, response time / refresh rate.
Most LCD Monitors only go up to 85hz? yet there are some reported TV's that do 120 and 200hz
Why cant they incorporate those values on monitors?
Re: Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
LCD TV's usually have high response times, high input lag. And those advertised doing over 60hz are doing it by interpolation tricks by making a blend of the first and second frame. They cant actually take any more than 60fps max.
For these + other reasons they are not frequently used as monitors.
Re: Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
10:16 monitor,
9:16 TV
different aespect ratios
Re: Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
Also the maximum resolution of panels, none of the TV panels do more than 1080, even the 40-50in ones.
Re: Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
Ah right, ok.
So can a LCD monitor only go up to 85hz?
Re: Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
LCD TVs are either IPS or PVA type, therefore they have better colour reproduction and better viewing angle.
LCD monitors are generally TN, therefore faster response times, but worse everything else.
Also TVs generally do a lot of post-processing to the video signal to improve its look by adjusting colours, reducing any noise, etc. So when you buy a TV, your just not paying for the LCD panel as you are when you buy a LCD monitor.

Except sane people buy decent monitors and get *VA/IPS panels :P
The only real difference between TVs and monitors is the aspect ratio and the fact that a TV has a built in tuner, you can get monitors with high refresh rates (the ones branded with the 3D), and you can get TVs with lower refresh rates...
They are essentially the same technology, and fundamentally use the same devices but the standard aspect ratio for (widescreen) Monitors is now 16:10, and TVs 16:9
Re: Difference between LCD TV's and LCD monitors
All new monitors now are being shifted to 16:9 ratio, I read somewhere that it was the chosen "standard" for monitors and tvs as people were getting confuzzled as to what HD was.

Really?
I would have thought they'd keep milking 2 different aspect ratios...

OK, I have bad memory, I actually bothered to find the article and turns out that what I said was actually all made up in my head :angst:

I spent an age last week looking for a 24" IPS panel (not interested in a *VA as it looks like more of a sideways move from TN than an upgrade)
The cheapest I could find after about 1 hour of research? About £600. Much as I think TN is crap, I ain't paying £600 for a 24" screen. I'll just get a 37" telly and view it from a much larger distance.

You're not looking hard enough!
The HP 2475W is a) a pretty damn good 24" IPS panel & b) is available direct from HP for £375+VAT.

HP Link: (it's in the small business section, but don't let that stop you): h10010 www1 hp com /wwpc/uk/en/sm/WF05a/382087-382087-64283-3884471-3884471-3648442.html
(Can't post the URLs completed as I'm a newbie...)
NB. Pay via QuidCo & you can get 3% cashback, plus a 10% off the asking price voucher. (I managed to get 18% off sticker when I bought mine, since the cashback was higher, but YMMV.) Of course cashback is not always reliable, although they paid out for me with no problems. Still, you get the 10% off anyway, so that's £340+VAT ish for a 24" H-IPS monitor. Will that do?
