    More monitors

Looking for a gfx card that'll support at least 3 monitors.
I'm guessing ATi(AMD) of some description.
    Would like passive is possible.
Wont play anything harder than CS:S/IL2
Currently have an underclocked 4870 (500/500 vs 750/1000stock)

    Re: More monitors

you could get a cheap second card to power the third monitor if it isn't for an eyefinity set up or anything like that.

What slots do you have available on your motherboard?

    Re: More monitors

I have slots but no space due to the HSf on the existing card covering all but a PCI slot, and tbh its so close to the PCI slot that any card in there would cover the fan

I thought the 4870 had DVI, HDMI and DP connections?

    Re: More monitors

before the 5 series i think your limited to 2 displays anyway. IIRC the fastest passive 5 series card is the 5670
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-s...es-dp-dvi-hdmi

Which will run the mentioned games fine but it wont blow you away. You could probably get a faster card and then stick an aftermarket heatsink on it but it will be expensive.

Im pretty sure that without running a dual card set up you will have to have at least one display port capable monitor.

    Re: More monitors

You can get displayport adapters to convert the DP out to DVI, but only certain ones will work with eyefinity. If you want something that's even vaguely a match for your 4870 you'll be after a 5750 at least. Powercolor do a passively cooled 5750, but I doubt it'd be easy to get hold of (although an etailer might order it in for you, I guess...).

    Re: More monitors

Dont forget to bare in mind my 4870 is hugely underclocked so power isnt an issue when you get down to it, I could do with someone thats got the 5750 or similar to do a few tests so I can compare those against my 4870u/c scores..

    Re: More monitors

From memory a stock 5750 is roughly equivalent to a stock 4850, perhaps slightly faster. Apparently Scan have a passive XFX 5670 (on pre-order), and the Gigabyte 5670 Ultimate (in stock), both of which supports eyefinity, but that's quite a step down even from an underclocked 4870 (it's only got half the shaders).

EDIT: whichever solution you go for, don't forget the Sapphire Active Displayport - DVI dongle for eyefinity goodness

    Re: More monitors

I am running a 4870 driving a 22" Dell monitor (centre) and a 3850 driving the two side monitors (22" Samsung and another 22" Dell). This works well but then, I only game on the centre monitor.

Both cards are pci-e but the 3850 is a passive single slot card so might be an option if you can get it to fit.

I'm currently waiting for the 6970 and a comparison with the 6870 in CF for my next upgrade.

    Re: More monitors

I'm on a mATX board though and the second slot is covered by the heatsink/fan of the other card otherwise I'd use the passive 4350 I have to power t'other monitor..

    Re: More monitors

Jim - I owe you a pint or two..i've been after an active DP adaptor for 4 months now but I was refusing to pay £100 for them when I could get a whole new DP monitor for only £150..didn't know they had dropped so much in price now!

Finally back to 3 screens for FSX Thanks!

    Re: More monitors

Thought I'd mention something I just found out as cool/low power seems important to you.

I've just upgraded from a 8800gt to a 6870, and using a passive DP-VGA adapter + 2 x DVI. I didn't realise why my idle temps were high, but it turns out the 6870 (and presumably 5xxx series as well?) doesn't drop to full idle if using 3 monitors. The memory speed doesn't drop at all even at complete idle, and the GPU only drops to 300mhz not 150mhz as it should.

I think that's just what the ATI/AMD cards do with 3 monitors. If I'm wrong, please let me know as I'd prefer lower idle temps/noise!

    Re: More monitors

I've managed to get a second card into the machine, I moved my 4870 to the second slot and have put a 4350 in the first one so there is a 5mm gap between the two.
And, I can now have 4 monitors as the 4350 has two outputs as well, Hmm, 1x22" 2x21"'s and a 15" Back in a mo just off to dig out my old 15" TFT...
