    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

    1. Prolonged use of CRT cause nausea, vomiting, headache and confusion.
It's also know to trigger epileptic fits.

Mainly down to the flickering and scanning nature of how a CRT works

Sitting position had a lot to do with it as people often sat too close to their screens and lean into them.

Having the frequency set at 75hz or above isn't a fix as different people would react to different frequencies in different ways.
The majority of people will suffer headaches after prolonged usage at below 50hz, while quite a few would suffer at 60hz, with the percentage rapidly dropping off after 75hz, at a distance of roughly 3ft, under that distance and the time for effects to be felt increases.
There is always a small percentage of people who will react at a given frequency, also the length of exposure needed to bring about effects varies from person to person.

Eye strain also mainly comes from the flickering and constant focusing at one point.
Normally you constantly move your eyes about, this is done automatically and is not under conscious control.
As is the constant refocusing at different distances as you look around.
The flickering while may not be noticed consciously, it is noticed sub-consciously, the eyes automatically track movement and focus on it, so even if nothing is going on in the screen the flickering is causing your eyes to keep looking and focusing at it.

The constant flickering of the screen also causes you to blink less often which causes your eyeballs to dry out.

Some of these issues are fixed/greatly reduced by LCD screens as they don't flicker, however not all of them are.

This is why I got so annoyed by some lcd monitor models which actually added a flicker to the back light to improve the refresh rate.

However that article has made a total joke of it self with one line.
The palming exercise will teach you to relax your eyes, which in turn will bring healthy energy to your eyes.
that one term shows a total lack of basic science, while most of the advice is generally accepted health advice (which you'll find in the bits of paper that you get with any monitor, if you bother to read them) including that line blows all the credibility out of the window.
Ether that or it's been copied & pasted from some thing else without real editorial control to spot the garbage, which means how much of the rest of it has been copied & pasted? and does the editor (copied & pasted so not creator) actually know any thing about the subject?

The comments on that "article" included this gem:

I still believe that CRTs are less dangerous than shoes.
Pretty much my thoughts on the matter, if my 22" phillips hadn't died a couple of years ago I would still be using it.

I believe this is true; no one in history has ever attacked an American president with a CRT monitor.

I'd guess that would be down to you being affected by two different flickering sources with different frequencies. When I said that working in an office was dangerous, I wasn't entirely joking...

At last, someone's come up with a worthwhile use for my old 15" CRT! Now, which world leader gets the honour...?

You're still haunted by that incident with the hole punch then.

No, it was the mechanised rotating filing shelves...

Or perhaps the two entire rooms filled with "dead" files. Paper archives scare the bejeezus out of me - something to do with my dust allergy I think

    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

They could have told us sooner - like when everyone used CRTs... I sold my last one in '06 and this article was written two years later!
