PC Monitor Xbox 360 - HDMI is more crisper

I recently purchased a new 24" Asus full HD monitor (1920x1080 native) purely for my Xbox 360 setup. It has DVI, VGA and HDMI ports.

I first connected it with the VGA cable and I noticed, mainly on black loading screens that the picture was a bit fuzzy, as if the pixels weren't perfectly still and smooth, it looked as if they were flickering.

I connected to HDMI and it seems to have solved this issue which is all good. No fuzzyness and it seems like a still image.

But I'm wondering why would VGA cause this flickering effect? Any ideas? Hadn't VGA supposed to be better?

    Cheers

When connected to my PC via VGA I notice the same thing happens, on dark backgrounds I notice a flicker.

Any idea what this could be?

Exactly this, your sending ahigher bandwidth digital signal from the xbox to the monitor, you probably won't notice the flickering so much on a smaller display, but you tend to find VGA on a bigger display shows off the flickering more.

VGA is an analogue connection which means that your Xbox has to convert the signal from digital to analogue then your TV has to convert it back again. These two levels of processing are what is causing the fuzziness and there's not a lot you can do about it. HDMI is a digital connection so no processing is required. The output from the Xbox processor goes straight to the display with no degradation.

So the VGA flicker on dark backgrounds with my 360 and PC is normal? Doesn't mean I have a faulty monitor?

    Cheers

Exactly as Betty Swallocks said, VGA is an analogue signal, so therefore the xbox is putting out a digital signal which is then being converted to anlogue, your always going to loose quality when converting from digital to analogue. When I had a 360 hooked upto my 23 inch via VGA I noticed the flickering, it's normal.

But what worries me is that I also get the same flickering when connecting my PC via VGA.

Not surprised by that either, if you've been using DVI and you switch back to VGA its something that once you know its there you'll always notice it.

But even when nocking the resolution down when connected via VGA the fuzzyness/flickering still doesn't go away - Is that still normal to?

I just want to be sure that my display isn't faulty or something.

    Cheers

Yes, it's nothing to do with the resolution. Fuzziness is due to only being able to approximate which pixels should be in which position. Flickering could be a consequence of the conversion process or poor quality cables/connectors, but I don't think anything faulty per se.

I've tried a lot of different cables and VGA to DVI connectors and it's still got the fuzzyness especially on black backgrounds. I can't understand why they'd put a VGA port on a 1920x1080 monitor if connecting by it produces a fuzzy image.

They put vga ports on new monitors for backwards compatibility, for people without hdmi/dvi ports on their gfx cards/pcs.

So do any of you on 24" 1920X1080 via VGA get fuzzyness on blacks? I tried hooking up my brothers 24" Full HDTV via VGA and he doesn't have any fuzzyness at all.

    Cheers

It depends a lot on the devices at both ends. Dell monitors, even those running at 1920 res are normally pretty good in keeping the analogue signal decent.

All you can do is make sure you have a decent cable as really cheap analogue ones often don't help. Otherwise you're going to have to resign to the fact that it's a pitfall of an analogue signal I'm afraid.
