Interesting there are more 16:10 then 16:9 users here, says a lot about the hexus community I reckon (good things!)

Having to settle with 16x9 on my 16x10 display if i want to duplicate desktops on both hdtv and minitor.
But 16x10 is so much better, if i were to buy another monitor wouldnt even consider if it was 16x9.
hi all!
Thank you for taking time and reading this. Sorry for the bulk of text.
I'm currently switching from 15.4'' laptop to 'all in one' desktop (in descending priority: general office, movies/tv/multimedia, photo and hd video editing, gaming). Looking forward to buy GPU and monitor tomorrow (Black Friday :)).
I assume 16:10 is better for general office/internet/editing/production work whereas 16:9 is best suited for multimedia. I have shortlisted U2711 and Hazro HZ27WC (both 27" 2560x1440) in order to have enough 'realestate' and supposedly mainstream 16:9 resolution.
Would someone please enlighten me is 16:10 monitor better for gaming than 16:9 and why? And will it matter in my situation at all?
Other suggestions for 2560x1440 or higher res monitor up to £550 also welcome!
PS. I'm very occasional gamer, but would like to future proof my other uses. Will lower end HD6870/gtx560 be an overkill?
I think at that scale (27") we will forgive you ;) besides they are IPS monitors, giving you a whole other way about being a monitor snob ;)
Only other monitor roughly in that bracket is the HP ZR-2740W. Though I am not sure you can get it for that cheap. Although I love Hexus, TFT Central know their monitors back to front and upside down.

:D :D :D I would personally be more than happy with Benq XL2410T, Dell U2412m (even P2411) or alike. The trouble is that there is an apple addict in our household who's driving me nuts on technology matters. Hence the shortlisted screens (and the rig) - at least similar in specs to imac and cinema display, yet affordable.
thanks for tftcentral links, very thorough reviews there. Bookmarked. :)
Does 5:3 exist? cause I have 1280x768 and used an online calculator that game me that ratio.
My monitor is 16:9 but most times i try to keep the original scale of the resolution of the source of device thats on display.
16:9 i think. Using my tv as a monitor at 1920x1080
I have a Dell 24" 1920x1200 2407WFP and a 21" Dell 1600x1200 as secondary, bought just before the manufacturers told us that we all need 16:9 screens to watch our bluray movies on :puke:
Having been out of touch with PC stuff for a few years, and recently needed to replace a dead laptop, I was really shocked and disgusted with the current 16:9-only offerings.
Fortunately I found an older HP reconditioned elitebook with a 16:10 screen and a full warranty.
The industry seems to have taken a big step back in screen resolutions, especially laptop ones in this respect.
Before I bought the LCD panels, I was running an Iiyama 22" CRT, and before that an Hitachi 22", both at 1920x1440. The 24" LCD was a step down!
1920x1200 - beautiful :)
Other than dropping costs I never understood the move to 16:9 lately, apart from maybe consumer awareness? (so being able to say 1080p screen and Joe Public understand what that means??)
Yeah, it's nice. Good colour gamut too. I'm dreading the day it blows up, although I think Acer are still doing a 1920x1200 panel at least.
A couple of months ago when my old laptop died and I discovered this issue, I did a little research into it.
The only real reasons that I could find were the 1080p issue like you mentioned, and streamlining the manufacturing processes to save costs for the manufacturers.
Meanwhile, one of the big makers (I don't recall which) published that they were only offering 16:9 because that's what consumers overwhelmingly wanted for watching HD movies on... Like we all use our laptops for that all the time! I somehow doubt that, given the number of comments I have read with views similar to mine.
But that's a standard trick isn't it? Tell us what we need, what we want, then sell it to us. If there isn't another option we have no choice but to buy it which proves the manufacturer's correct!
I'm a bit cynical when it comes to such things, just in case you didn't notice, lol.
Been 1920x1200 for the past couple of years, 16:10 is the only way to go for me for computer use and gaming for me.
16:9 is a TV format, so I leave that for the 46" in the living room for watching cable/bluray and playing on the consoles.
When it comes to movies they are wider than that anyway (unless pretty old) so 16:10/16:9 doesn't matter.
And decent PC game will adapt it's view to 16:10 flawlessly, and those that don't can usually be tweaked.
Been 16:9 for 3 years now, moved from a Dell SW2409 to a Hazro HZ27WD 2560X1440. Most monitors now do 16:9, can't really say I prefer 16:10 over 16:9.
All mine are 16:9 use 3x16:9 for a 5760x1080 display
but is certainly interesting to see more people are using 16:10 as most monitors you see for sale are all 16:9
