    Question Which monitor for gaming?

    Hi,

Since I don't do any photo editing ect.,
can the extra cost for the U2410 be justified for gaming?

    DELL ULTRASHARP U2412M 24"
    DELL ULTRASHARP U2410 24"

    Thanks

    Re: Which monitor for gaming?

Good reviews of both on here: www.tftcentral.co.uk

Apart from losing an HDMI port the U2412m is better for gaming. Lower input lag, response times etc. It's only if you need an extended colour space you'll need to go for the U2410. If it were me I'd save the money, space, and power and get the U2412m assuming gaming is your governing requirement.

    Re: Which monitor for gaming?

Hi, I'm trying to find a monitor for my other half for xmas and was wondering what's important for a gaming monitor other than response time? Does the frame rate matter if it's an LED monitor? I'm only wanting to spend around £100 by the way.

    Re: Which monitor for gaming?

Well if your only looking to spend £100 max then your options are rather limited, a TN panel is fine.

LED monitors are better, lower running temperatures, lower power consumption, better more even brightness and contrast.

A cheap 22" TN panel led monitor will cost around £90-100 and should be fine for gaming.
    eg http://www.ebuyer.com/286511-philips...or-227e3lsu-00

edit: they are also thinner but personally I really don't think that matters much.

Dell U2312 or even better the U2412 are the ones I'd go straight for. Detailed reviews explaining why are here: www.tftcentral.co.uk

    Re: Which monitor for gaming?

Oh yes there no denying that the dell IPS monitors are great and very high quality but they are not cheap ether.

The cheap dell TN monitors are not so good, they are still ok, just nothing special but have a rather high price tag, there are other monitors just as good for less.

    Re: Which monitor for gaming?

response time is the time taken for pixels to change from black to white to black, or grey to white to grey. Different manufacturers state different times. A 2ms b-w-b is better than 2ms g-w-g.

Anything under 8ms wont really be picked up by the naked eye, so it is debatable if 5ms is really that much worse than 2ms. Some monitors really do suck with leaving a visible trail behind the mouse etc. Do read up on this. there are overdrive technologies designed to mitigate the effect with varying success by different manufacturers.

For gaming a key thing is input lag. There's no point having world beating g2g response times if the image you see lags the output of your machine by 10 seconds. You'll be dead before you've seen who shot you. I don't know if manufacturer's state input lag. It's something I usually need to go to reviews for. tftcentral is handy in this respect, but it tends to only cover IPS screens.

Viewing angles are always better on an IPS screen than a TN screen. As is colour reproduction, usually. IPS monitors usually cost slightly more therefore.

I looked around the £100 price range, but I'm quite fussy and nothing I found really ticked all the boxes for me. Everything there was a compromise in some way or other. I decided to double my budget and go for an IPS screen. Given that everything you do on the machine requires the screen it seems kind of fundamental to get this right as it will really affect your enjoyment if its a dud.

    Re: Which monitor for gaming?

Thanks for the advise, I spent a good 6 hours sifting through monitors yesterday! I'm bored of xmas shopping now :/ unfortunately a lot of the Dell ones were a bit too expensive and he wanted a 23 or 24" ideally so I had to give up some of the quality (size matters apparently!). Couldn't really go too far over budget as I'd just spent £40 on some speakers before everywhere sold out, got him the Corsair SP2200 2.1 sound system as they had good reviews and settled for a Philips Brilliance C-Line 234CL2SB 23" as it seemed like the next step up from the one Pob255 posted and was only slightly over budget (£120). Thanks ik9000 for explaining it to me I understood a good half of it! couldn't find a 2ms b-w-b though and it doesn't say the input lag on the one I got unfortunately (or at least I couldn't find it) but what do you guys think? Will it be do do you reckon?
(I also entered the Christmas competition for the keyboard, mouse or headset so if I win I look like an extra good wifey that's spent a fortune! Haha)

Anyhoos, thanks again your posts were really helpful, gave me a good starting point and an idea what to look out for
