Well I`ve just ordered a dell u2711 monitor :D
My thinking is that I can use one of my current 20 inch monitors next to it in portrait for a second screen for now and then if I do want to upgrade at a later date I can get a second 27 inch panel :D

This is exactly how I have my two 24"s setup i.e horizontal for everyday use/gaming and portrait if I need more space.

Its a sweet spot I think and a compromise between 3x24"s and a single large screen.
I personally love it! :)
It really does depend on what you'll use your PC for to be honest. Two 24" screens can be better for general desktop usage I find. (i.e snapping one or two Chrome windows to 1 screen and having Outlook running on the other).
However, for my photo editing, you really can't match the higher resolutions that the 27 and 30" monitors provide. Less zooming and scrolling around really speed up some of the workflow.
Thats why I`m thinking my 27 /20 inch combo should work pretty well
The 27 for main use ie photo editing, gaming etc and the second for web browsing at the same time :D
Now the question is would it be overkill to use both my old 20`s with the new 27 hmmm hehe
Yes, that sounds just about perfect. If you use programs like Lightroom, you can have the picture library open on the 20", whilst having the one you're currently working on on your main 27" display.
As for using TWO 20"'s, yes that's very greedy - and yes, go for it! ;-)
But seriously, if you've got the graphics inputs, the deskspace, and you think you'll actually use it, then why not. There was a time when I didn't think I'd need 16GB of RAM, but now that I keep about 100 Chrome tabs open all the time, there really is! Your usage will probably adapt to the resources you have at your disposal :).
i've been thinking about this myself. i currently have a 20 inch and was thinking of just getting a 2nd hand 20incher as well to double up rather than get a single 24inch monitor.
i sit pretty close to my monitor.
I noticed you got the 27inch dell and running on a 6950, what is the picture like on the monitor? And whats games do you play and how well do they perform as i too have a2gb 6950 and looking at a 2" monitor with the 2560 x 1440 res but been told that it would struggle to perform well
Dual always. More screen real estate, better image quality (better ppi). Greater potential for multi-tasking. Often lower response times and higher refresh rates too.
This is an old thread, but since were here, there's always the third option with the 29" super widescreen displays with 2560x1080 resolution.

A lot more will be released in the coming months

For me it depends on the uses.
If it's more work based then the 2 screens are better, however if you're more going to be watching films and play games then the one bigger screen may be better.
I am in the same boat, I don't know what to go for but i'm leaning more towards 2* 24" monitors. I personally use 2 monitors for work and I find it very useful to have the 2 monitors.
