Dual 24`s or a single 27?
Hey people,
I`m thinking of upgrading my displays for christmas. Atm I`m running dual 20 inch monitors (dell 2005 FPW`s)
I`m currently looking at getting 2 Dell u2412 monitors to replace them but someone suggested I should get a 27 inch screen instead so now I`m confused lol.
What does everyone think Dual monitors or one bigger monitor?
Budget is about 5-600

Question is, how far do you sit from your monitors? I was looking at a 27" but sitting less than a meter from the screens a 27" would be over kill and I am now looking at a 24" max

What he said. I'm looking the best 24" I can afford.
Speaking of which does anyone know of one with a silver/white bezel ?
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
Do you want more screen or more pixels? For your £600 you could get a high res 27" panel, and it might be better than two £300 monitors depending on what you want to use it for, but without more info it's hard to be sure!
So, gaming, or just lots of desktop space?

Could I interest you instead in a Dell professional series 23" with silver bezel?
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
OOOooooh. That's very purty. (just like my pickup truck)
Turns out the 2412 is in silver too.

Now all I need is a FT02 in silver and I'm away !
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
I sit about a metre away from the screens so maybe 27 could be a bit large..
Useage would have been a good idea lol
Gaming, Web browsing, Programming, Photo editing. :D
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
Personally I'd never use 2 screens for gaming, couldn't hack the bezels down the middle of the screen. The reason I was poking around the Dell website in the first place was that they do a 22" 1680x1050 professional series with Displayport and rotation for £202. Since you've got a 6950, you could pick up three of those for your choice of 5040x1050 or 3150x1680 eyefinity setups. More screen real estate and more pixels than either 1x27" or 2x24" monitors. With your budget and existing system, it's what I'd go for...
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
I am looking about at monitors myself atm, looking for a 23"+ that does DVI and HDMI and is good for gaming on the PC and the 360 as I would hook both to it. Most I find though people complain about a lot of ghosting.
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
Tough call!
2 x 24" = Great for productivity.....but the second screen is almost redundant while gaming...
1 x 27" = Gaming is better, some productivity stuff becomes a bit more fiddly.
3 x 22/24 = 6950 will not cut it in some games......in fact, a single 580 will need some eye-candy turned down in some modern games.......let alone a 6950!
in the same position I think I would go with the 27 and keep one (or even both!) of the 20s to go with it for extra desktop space when needed.

There isn't much difference between 24" and 27", the resolution is still likely going to be crap 1080p or maybe just a little bigger, still not worth it.
An 6950 is a very powerful GPU and as such it can handle games at 5670x1080/1200 fine on it's own. You won't get steady 60+ FPS but you get enough FPS for you to play without any troubles.
And yes.. am using an 6950 (Oc'ed/unlocked to a 6970) for 5670x1080 gaming in BFBC2 and BF3, L4D1/2 and many more, running Ultra/High settings too.
But I do turn AA etc to x1/x4 for some games.
I highly recommend he gets two screens now and gets a third later when he can afford it.

Not true - I'm assuming this thread is about the 27" 2560x1440 panels? If you're considering a 27" 1920x1080 screen then I think that's a bit crazy.
I would go for the 27" for three reasons:
1) You can later on upgrade to 2x27" if you need more screen space
2) One screen is easier to configure, less stress on the graphics card, less power, less space etc
3) Lots of stuff doesn't work well spread across two screens - games for one

1. He can buy two monitors for the price of one now which is far cheaper then buying a large monitor now then buying a other one later and still not able to do EF/NS gaming, more money is being spent, if he can afford it, that's fine.
2. Find this irreverent, since three screens are as easy to configure as one screen? It's just a few clicks, if he is using Windows 7, then it will identify 3 monitors right away without much setting up. Power and stress can be saved by turning off the monitors when not needed, for example, my left monitor is turned off right. Space? Hmm, if he is looking into 2 monitors now.. a third won't make much difference. If you run one mile, you might as well run the second to say.
3. I don't know anyone who would play games on two monitors.
I had a choice a while ago, buy one large 40" HDTV for £500 or buy two 24" 1980x1200 monitors for the same money, think I made the right choice, since otherwise I could easy be spending £1500 for three HDTV's when I have only spent £600 in total for 3 HP2405wg's. If I had lots of money, I would switch to 40"s in a flash, I have to be honest, am going to miss the 40" am using now as my center screen, but it's going to be moved on the wall soon, ah well.
Once you play at these resolutions, everything else sucks.
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
I've personally just 'downsized' from a 28" Hans-G (TN panel) to a 24" Dell u2410 - partly for the vastly improved picture quality & extra inputs, but also because I was sick and tired of things being outside of my central field of vision when gaming...
I sit maybe 70-80cm away from the screen (thats from my face to the screen), and at that distance I found myself turning my head to check fully what was on the screen at any one time... which during say BF3 is a major disadvantage!
I'd go the twin or tri screen route myself - twin for working, tri if I always wanted to game... as on 3 screens (assuming all are active at once as one large display) your crosshairs are in the middle of a screen, and not spread between two bezels...

True. I guess either way you can upgrade from 2 to 3 or from 1 to 2 if you're unhappy with it. I just think if you're starting out, you should go with the biggest resolution you can afford and add to that if you want.

Maybe technically they aren't too difficult, but physically they are. 3 screens need arranging and angling, it's unlikely they'll ever be properly straight. And you can't deny that one screen is much easier to use than two (even if less efficient), even just from the aspect of shifting windows around the screen. Furthermore, if you play old games multimonitor tends to go haywire, and you're relying on a 3 output card which a lot these days aren't capable of. I agree that power can be saved by turning one monitor off, the point I'm making is that a higher res screen might do the job, and one 2560x1440 screen will use less then two 1920x1080 panels.

Precisely, which is why I would want a 2560x1440 screen. Games on that would be great, games on two 1920x1080 screens would be rubbish, so your choice for gaming is between 2560x1440, 1920x1080, or EF, which wasn't one of the suggestions.

Yeah, I would say that was the right choice. I have two Dell 21.5" 1920x1080 panels at the moment, and upgrading to EF would make far more sense than upgrading panel size, but I'm still tempted by a 30" 2560x1600 option. It's certainly not a clearcut decision.
Re: Dual 24`s or a single 27?
At the moment I only game on one of my 2 screens, you never really though about multi monitor gaming as it aways seemed too much messing.
Another requirement I forgot to mention is ideally I'd like display port as my new case is a bit awkward getting dvi cables in (its a Silverstone fortress ft03
