To 3DVision2 or Not to 3DVision2

Some of my monitor history. Bought my first PC in 2001 (I regret this now but hey I was young and still learning) which came with a 17" ProView monitor. Replaced it with a 17" Apple Studio CRT I found on the street (I found a second one the same week ) in 2005. It bit the bucket a year later so I used the second one till this day.

The house got extended and I got a study out of it. Making a new desk, bought a new case and I think I'm long past a monitor upgrade. Which brings me to you guys for some advice.

I've thought about biting the bullet and getting a 3DVision2 capable monitor and came close to getting the ASUS VG278H. But before I did I checked out the price of regular 27" LED monitors (e.g. VE278Q & VK278Q). For the same price as the 3D one I could buy two (not that I want two) which changes the perspective.

So what do you guys say. Go for it. Not. Wait. Buy something else?

    Thanks.

You might need another GTX570 as 3D games do tax GPUs more,ie,you need to do twice the 3D rendering.

That's the other thing putting me off. I'll have to go SLi or maybe get a GTX590 even then I'll be restricted to medium/low settings. Plus I'll need a stronger PSU for it to run efficiently with power to spare. Quite off putting.

Or not depending on the games your running and also what GTX 570 you have so it is a case of YMMV depending on settings really and what resolutions your running and also what AA and FSAA levels are applied.

I have a single GTX 570 card - the MSI GTX 570 twin frozr PE/OC slightly overclocked to 900 MHz as opposed to 770 MHz and so far I've had mostly everything on high or ultra on a variety of games without any visable slowdown in BF3, Skyrim, Batman Arkham Asylum and a few other 3D games which would warrant myself getting another GTX 570.

The only time I've ever seen the PC struggle was with the unpatched batman in DX 11 mode and of course BF3 with all the effects on full whack which was to be expected when I built the system.

I am just about to get a passive 3D screen to test using the tri-def technology, so I will then be able to compare them properly after a few days usage to find the pro's and con's of both types of technology.

The only issue I have had with the 3d vision was the dropping of settings which was linked to a BETA driver so it was irrelevant and the other issue I had has been fixed with the 3d vision 2 as wearing the glasses with the sharkoon X-TATIC digital headset so putting the glasses on and off with the headset was slightly tricky at times

I've got exactly the same card Lee. Are you talking about playing games on a regular monitor or in 3D?

Pretty sure he is referring to 3D mode.

Personally, I would use one for a bit if possible and see if you think it's worth it.

I tend to play everthing in 3D now on the Acer GD245HQ screen I have

For a start it annoys the hell out of my brother as he is not able to watch what I am doing and also with games like Skyrim it adds so much to the title that playing it in 2D just doesn't feel right once you've played for a few hours and become custom to the 3D effects. Even SC2 gets played in 3D as it makes things easier to plan due to the 3D working fine with the view angles and various older titles like CS:S as well.

I thought the 3D was a gimmick, but I'm a convert as such and use it everyday when gaming and seriously need to get a few more sets of glasses to enable people to watch a few blu-rays

Do you know anywhere in London I can test one?

It's re-assuring to hear you say that. What worries me is that I average 75FPS on Ultra settings at 1600x1200. Moving up to 1080 resolution I could probably keep the same framerate going on High. However if I were play in 3D that gets halved so I'll have ~35 fps per eye. How has that been for you?

I've not noticed any significant downside and stuttering and can happily run around Skyrim bashing everything without the game being ruined and the same for BF3 which I'm just about to go play for a few hours

You're starting to convince me. Once I finish my desk project I think I'm going to have to make a bank withdrawal...
