Lack of Focus using HDMI Signal

Not sure whether this should be in 'Displays and Monitors' or in 'Graphics Cards' but I have an odd difference in the image quality on my Samsung S23A350H when connected to my Radeon HD 6950 via the HDMI port on the graphics card, as opposed to when it is connected via a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

HDMI to HDMI results in a vaguely blurred image with text lacking uniform focus and clarity across the whole screen. DVI/HDMI adaptor to HDMI gives a much sharper image with beautifully sharp, focused text.

Strange, and although I'm not really looking for a 'solution' as I'm quite happy to connect using the DVI to HDMI adaptor, it would be interesting to know what might be the cause.

Maybe it is considering your monitor to be a television when it's connected HDMI-HDMI and applies soething like interleaving or whatever.

Look at AMD Catalyst and see what if any post-processing it's doing.

An obvious one, but is it at the wrong resolution?

Re: Lack of Focus using HDMI Signal

HDMI bypasses any scaling by the TV (usually) so IMHO it's unlikely to be a res problem.

    Id agree with ferret.

Being HDMI has nothing to do with scaling / resolution, they are still strictly independent. Settings like 1:1 pixel mapping are done by the end device, the cabling is irrelevant.
My Sony for example often selects the wrong aspect ratio / scaling on HDMI from the PS3 when watching Blu-rays. Annoying

You can send a 640*480 signal down HDMI if you want, my thinking was that the HDMI port on the graphics card is a different output as far as it is concerned. If it can't detect the correct resolution, it will drop back to a lower one.

Still worth checking for the few seconds it will take

Not actually at the subject monitor and PC at the moment as I am 'on the road' but from memory the Catalyst Control Center showed resolution as 1080p (1920 x 1080) when connected HDMI to HDMI and 1920 x 1080 when connected DVI-D to HDMI.

One thing I failed to 'report' before was that on initial connection and setup (connected HDMI to HDMI) the screen image, while reported as 1080p did not fill the full extent of the screen, but I was able to expand the image to do so by adjusting underscan/overscan in the CCC.

Sorry, but I'm not even sure where I would find that in the Catalyst Control Center

It almost sounds like the monitor isn't using the signal for 1:1 pixel mapping. Do you have any options on the screen such as 'zoom' or 'widescreen' that you have turned on? Do you have an option in the menu to reset everything to default?

DVI/HDMI for this kind of application really should be plug and play, provided it's set to the correct resolution.

If you're not used to playing around with CCC and overscan settings, could I offer a rather brutal, but sure way of resetting this all? Uninstall CCC, then your drivers and update them to the latest version. If it asks you if you want to keep any saved profiles, choose no.

Once this is done, see if you have the same issue. If you do, could you test it on another screen? (A TV will do!).

Overscan really shouldn't be an issue when connecting a graphics card to a home monitor, regardless of being HDMI or DVI. Overscan is something you expect to have to deal with on cheap / older TVs when using digital (due to crappy signal processing boards), but these days, there shouldn't be a TV on the market where you need to worry about overscan on digital.
