Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
As I don't use Windows much, I've forgotten the details of the control panel but there shouldn't be a problem with the resolution and an 'HD Ready' TV like that. I'm using an older 9800 GT via VGA and have done so without a problem with two PCs.
I'm thrown by your mention of HD/SD and custom resolutions. I've got ATI and Nvidia here and haven't had to do more than pick a resolution from a list with either card or PC. It worked fine over six years ago and I haven't had a problem once over the intervening years.
I've always run at 1360, leaving a few black pixels on each side and making it a scaling-free 1:1. Years ago, that may have been the only option and I can't choose 1366 now as the remote doesn't work and so I'm unable to use it to fine-tune the output.
I don't sit close to the telly, but I'd know if the image was soft. It would be too uncomfortable to look at for me too and it's easy to see when a lower (hence, scaled) resolution is being used.
I have seen people on other forums say that televisions aren't as good, but it looks like yours isn't getting a chance to give its best at the moment and your monitor doesn't have so great a resolution that it would be a night and day difference when compared to your TV. Perhaps you can make some snapshots of the settings panels so that we might see what you're describing and hopefully discover what's not right?
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Here are screen captures of the settings i am using, i have not included the ones for the monitor as that is working just fine. I only wish i could take actual photos of the 2 screens to show you what i was seeing and the vast difference in quality.
I dont think makes a difference, but tv is connects by DVI to HDMI and PC monitor is DVI to VGA

Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
The last picture is showing the refresh rate as 75Hz, even though the others are 60Hz.
75 is not right, and if it's been set at that, that might explain it. Double check it's actually using 60 :)
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Sorry about that, i forgot to change that back to 60hz, but it actually doesn't make much difference wheni change that setting, if I change the Hz on the screen resolution then it makes a difference. But I changed that setting to 60Hz to check and it still doesn't make any difference to clarity of screen and text.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
I know from the other post that it's too late for Stylis10 now, but could the HDMI be responsible for the problems here? Or even an adaptor if there was one for mini-HDMI to HDMI?
Do the OS and drivers behave properly with HDMI nowadays and treat it just as another connection in the same way that I've always had with VGA and DVI? I've noticed lots of comments about overscan and underscan on forums for a few years (and the TV 'Just Scan' option makes even more sense now) and with no personal experience of PCs and HDMI, I'm interested in finding a solution.

I had tried a mini hdmi to hdmi cable aswell on the tv, every possible combinantion on mini hdmi and Dvi to VGA and hdmi was tried on the tv, I think it may just have been something faulty in the tv it's self.
I also hooked the pc upto a 32" HDTV last night to check before I finally sold my tv and it was crystal clear with both dvi to VGA and dvi to hdmi. Hence I have to assume it was just the tv.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
They can be very iffy at times. My TV had HDMI and DVI-D from memory and on the HDMI it looked like my desktop, but in a misty marsh, 100-200 yards away. On DVI-D it looked fine.
I guess most TVs aren't really tested with PCs.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
A friend has an HD TV that looks fine when watching TV, but using his media centre PC (connected via HDMI I think) text looks fuzzy. We've spent several hours playing with options on both the TV and the PC, never managed to make it look better. If you get close you can clearly see the pixels like on an old CRT TV.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
If game mode is on, try disabling it.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
my tv is 1080p and have no problems with it @60hz
think its the tv as have a few with that res and all the text is sort of squished on the screen and hard to read.
same with hdmi dvi and even worse with vga cables

VGA cable actually gave a little improvement for me, but still not satisfactory.
Either way I need. To find a decent monitor, hence my other thread
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Hi I know this is out of date, but want to ask, with todays LCD TVs, could a TV stand as both a PC monitor using HDMI AND to be used as a TV. I would be switching them around to use as a TV for DVDs, gaming, and then switch around for a PC, using work and also PC gaming using its HDMI port.
I heard the ghost effect can happen due to the static icons in Windows. Can this happen? Is it dependent on the brand, quality or can a TV be used in the same way as a monitor with no issues?
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Yes. The issues only normally start if you buy a cheap brand with a crappy image processor, although occasionally you can get a TV with a bad image processor even from a named manufacturer.
A TV really is a simple device. You hook up a digital cable, make sure the pixel ratio is set to 1:1, make sure any image processing is off on that input and you shouldn't have any issues.
I've never, ever seen a branded, decent TV that's had issues. It's a case of you get what you pay for in my experience.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Well to be honest I do not know many good branded TVs, only the major Samsung, LG etc.
I can get a TV called Kogan, apparently an Australian company. It is 22", £109? Is that around the price of a 22" TV. I have 2x monitors at the moment, but want to use a 22" when I feel like it. But I am not sure if its going to be good quality. They are based in the UK and apparently have good reviews, although the sound is not perfect apparently.
Does anyone have a list of what brands not to buy when using a TV for a monitor?
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Well i use a 32' HDTV - Panasonic's cheapest entry level lcd tv....no problems at all via dvi to hdmi @60hz. (nvidia)
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Well that relieves me :P I will take the plunge. I will be using native HDMI as well.
