TV as PC monitor...slight problems
I have a Sony 22" KDLBX200 tv that i am currently using as a pc monitor. I find that when watching movies or anything the display is fine, however when its comes to reading text or using word the display shows the text to be a little fuzzy (actually i start to realize the whole display is not as sharp and that of a pc monitor)
Is there anyway i can fix this?
my pc has 2 DVI out puts and 1 mini-HDMI, the tv has an HDMI, and VGA input and no combination of the 2 seems to fix the problem.
Do i need to buy a new monitor or can i save time with that by just using the T.V.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
i should mention that as a student, i do alot of essay writing and stuff and the display is starting to strain my eyes.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Is that a 1080p model?
I used a 22" 1080p TV as a monitor for an entire year last year and had no problems at all.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Make sure you've got the output set at the native resolution of the screen (1366x768, or 1920x1080, and at a refresh rate it's happy with).
The manual might say which modes over HDMI will allow "just scan" or "1:1 pixel mapping"; you need one of these otherwise the monitor will scale the input, resulting in blurriness. You might also have to change the display settings on the monitor from "auto" or "16:9" or whatever, to "just scan" or "1:1 mapping".
Ultimately once you've done that, every pixel you send should map directly to a display pixel; no more blur!
It's easier to do on some monitors/graphics cards than others...
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
I have got both the Pc monitor and the TV set up to the PC right now and have tried to fiddle with the auto setting on the TV and yet, the PC monitor is still giving me a far sharper image than the TV, there's quite a big difference in the quality of output.
i dont think my tv is 1080p...as the recommended screen resolution is 1366x768
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
What graphics card are you using? I had to adjust the over/underscan options when using an AMD (ATI) Radeon based card.... I did this via the catalyst control center (now called AMD Vision Engine Control Center). I had to select the scaling options and move the slider to the far right where it says 'Overscan 0%'.
If the screen doesn't support 1920x1080 then you could also try 1280x720 (some screens i've tried looked a bit iffy at 1366x768 when using a PC).
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
im using a 1GB EVGA GTX460 SC graphics card.
i tried going into the nvidia graphics program and changed it from a pc output to HD at 1280 x 720 and then set overscan to off on the tv, but still not much of a difference, the pc monitor just shows up clearer and crisper and no blurr with the text compared to the tv when side by side.
I think i may just go into CEX and swap the tv for an actual PC Monitor,
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Change it to 1366x768 as that is the native resolution of the TV
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Yeah, try flinging 1366x768 out to the TV. At 720p it'll still be stretching everything out a tiny bit == blurry!
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
The actualt native resolution is 1360x768, but ive already tried that, when i go into my nvidia program i see that there are HD/SD out puts and PC ouputs, i have tried almost all of them, but i notice ther is no HD/SD ouput in the format of 1360x768. If i was to create a custom ouput as 1360x768 in HD/SD with a refresh rate of my choice (dont know what rate to choose yet).
just tried this and still im not satisfied. I think just getting a pc monitor is the best option (the pc monitor i have been using to compare the tv too is not mine)
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
If you're comparing a PC monitor at 1920x1080 to a TV at 1360x768 then the TV is always going to compare badly. Considering you can get a PC monitor @ 1920x1080 for less than £100 if you're not using the features of the TV (i.e. built in audio, freeview tuner, etc) you might as well switch over to a monitor.

Im comparing the TV to a PC monitor that has 1440x900 resolution, and the only reason i bought the TV was to play the xbox and ps3 on as-well, but that hasnt happened in months and i shall be selling those aswell, so it only makes sense to have a proper PC monitor now.
I was just hoping there was a quicker way in getting a much better result than selling.
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
Try switching the screen mode on the TV?

tried all the modes with each resolution. just not giving me the clarity i want
Re: TV as PC monitor...slight problems
You need to turn off any overscan on both the TV and the graphics driver.
From a quick google for "sony tv overscan pc" it turned up the result of:
On the TV press Menu->Picture->Picture Mode->Full Pixel.
Otherwise, have you tried a DVI to VGA adaptor on the video card and a VGA cable? It isn't normally as good a picture as DVI/HDMI into HDMI input on the TV, but it is a lot easier to get working as TVs don't apply an overscan to the VGA input.

Yeah ive tried all of that, ive had overscan on and off. The picture quality is jsut nowhere as good, i put the tv as main monitor and used pc monitor as extended monitor, and then put 2 word documents filled with text up on the screen and there was such a big difference between the clarity of the two, the PC monitor was just so much better, i just cant seem to get the crispness and quality from the tv.
