Thumbs up DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI to VGA converter: which provides best output?

    Harrow!

I've acquired an old CRT (Mitsi DiamondPlus 200) which has 2 VGA ports. My 7950 has 2 mini-dp, an HDMI, a DL-DVI-I and a SL-DVI-D as outputs. I was just wondering which was superior (or indeed if there was any difference to the image quality or refresh rates or whatnot) when using any of these with their respective adapters...

    Cheers

PS Not bothering with the DVI-D, as the DAC required is so expensive and I need it for another, more modern monitor anyhooo.

Re: DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI to VGA converter: which provides best output?

For simplicity, go with the DVI-I. The specification incorporates native VGA in the connector, and the simple DVI-VGA dongle simply reroutes the VGA signals as appropriate. I'd be amazed if you didn't get one with your card, but if not they only cost a few quid, or if you ask around your mates or on the forum most techy people have at least a couple of spares lying around!

AFAIK neither HDMI nor DP have a native analogue component so VGA adapters from either source must also include a DAC, which is presumably why (reputable) adapters are at least £15. My guess would be that the quality over DVI would depend solely on your graphics card, whilst the quality over HDMI/DP would depend on the adapter you bought, but I'm prepared to be corrected on that if someone else knows better

Cheers, got one from Amazon for £1.69 inc del, thanks for advice

Weird looking at a CRT (especially at 1800x1440) after TFT...

Now if only I could find a Sony Fw900...

They pop up on Ebay every now and again, but sadly the tubes are so old now, you get the normal CRT issues
