Monitor native resolution versus maximum resolution on GPU

Bit unsure on how this works sorry. If a monitor has a native/maximum resolution of say 1920x1080 but your gpu says you can go to 2xxxX1xxx, basically something higher, I'm guessing you cannot actually exceed the monitor maximum resolution right?

When a GPU states something over 1080p resolution is it refering to using multiple monitors to achieve this? Are there monitors which can output at higher than 1920x1080 natively without going dual display?

Just need some clarification here, for when I come to choose a monitor.

Yes, you can easily buy 30" monitors that display 2560*1600.

There are some exceedingly rare monitors for special purposes, i.e. air traffic control or medical uses, that go even higher than that.

However much the GPU will support, you can't output more than what the monitor can receive. Well, you can in some cases, but the monitor will just scroll the screen so you're still only getting 1920*1080 or whatever in reality.

Thanks. I'm guessing it's unlikely to find a, say, 24" that outputs higher than 1920x1080? Also guessing you're talking alot of money for these types.

There are more and more 23/24" 1440p monitors popping up. Some graphics drivers will let you set a higher resolution and then scale the image down.....there is absolutely nothing to be gained from it though. Your visual quality will suffer as you lose 1:1 pixel mapping and you take a performance penalty from rendering at a higher resolution.
    Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu

Re: Monitor native resolution versus maximum resolution on GPU

Thanks. I'm making a new build for the first time in 8 years, and aiming for a top end spec so just wanted clarification to ensure I wouldn't be missing out.

How do I mark this as resolved?

24" monitor were originally 1920x1200 which is 16:10 aspect ratio. Both my 24" Dell monitors are like this, it's a shame they are hard to get hold of now, although 1440p (2640x1440) would be a nice upgrade in my opinion.

Re: Monitor native resolution versus maximum resolution on GPU

If your running multiple monitors with each a max of 1920x1080 can these be combined for a larger res if your flu supports it or is it still 1920x1080?

The monitors obviously still run at 1920x1080 individually, but if you have two 1080p monitors then you technically have 3840 x 1080 in front of you.
The resolution limitations on most modern GPU's are per port.
