    Which monitor?

I'm looking to buy a new monitor as i'm no longer satisifed with my 23" IPS screen (LG IPS235V-BN). I was thinking about getting one of those Korean 27" IPS screens, but i'm not sure if my Radeon 7950 will cope with maxed out game settings at 2560x1440 resolution . I can also easily notice motion blur/ghosting which is another reason why i might not bother with IPS screens (response times are not great with IPS). I'm thinking about getting a 24" 120hz TN screen as my PC is mainly used for gaming, but not sure which one to get and don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a TN screen...

    What do you guys recommend?

    Cheers

    Re: Which monitor?

Does anyone think my Radeon 7950 (HIS IceQ Boost Clock Edition) will handle games fine at 2560x1440 (preferably maxed out, but might not need AA at this res)? The only issue i have with IPS though is the pixel response time... My current IPS screen is rated at 5ms grey to grey (or 14ms black-white-black) and i do notice a bit of motion blur/ghosting with some games and it's starting to bother me recently, although most people probably wouldn't really notice unless looking for it .

Gaming is my main priority, so would it be better for me to just get a 24" 120hz screen? Not too sure about a 27" 120hz as it might not look too great with it being only 1080p... I'm not bothered about viewing angles as i sit directly infront of my monitor when gaming (who doesn't?) and a properly calibrated TN panel still produces decent colours although not on an IPS level, but i can live with that as my last TN monitor (LG W2442PE-BF) did a decent job .

What do you guys think? I've been mulling over this for a while now and i want to make a decision in time for xmas (my partner will be getting it for me as i built her a gaming PC for her b'day ).

    Re: Which monitor?

For whether 27" looks great at 1080p... I think that's highly subjective. Some people say it looks great. Others say it looks crap. If you stick at the distance you would a 22" monitor, I imagine it does look ****ty. Push it back a little (which you'd probably have to do with a screen that's 5inchs bigger on the diagonal anyway) and it'll probably be fine. Hopefully by the end of the week, I can let you know my opinion on that one anyway!

    Re: Which monitor?

The Boost edition 7950s get around 47.8 frames per second at 2560x1600 with Ultra Quality + FXAA-High according to Anandtech.

Better than i thought and It may even squeeze out a few more FPS with the 12.11 drivers . The only other thing that might put me off is the pixel response time... I've not yet come across an IPS screen that doesn't display some sort of ghosting/streaking/motion blur. My old LG W244PE-BF screen (TN) was brilliant as it had absolutely no ghosting/blurring at all!

I had a lg 27 monitor and it was brill! Then I went and got a 32 lg TV - 1080p. I sit 2 feet away from and text is crystal clear. But that's me! My eyes are not the same as when i was 30 odd. I still only have to wear glasses on small print or bad light. So everybody is going to be different. But hey, I would rather have a bigger display than a smaller one where i have to dig out my specs! And a good ld TV that acts as a good screen for print will also be brilliant for games. Also i get a tv out of it!

Would never go back to a piddly sized screen or that cost an arm and a leg like your dedicated 30'' computer screens.

I actually use a 37" LG TV with my HTPC and it's pretty good (i would prefer a larger and newer model now though ). The text can be hard to read if i'm sitting further away on the sofa (it's in my living room) when set to 1080p. My LG TV (37LH5000) uses an S-IPS panel and yet i don't notice any ghosting/streaking or motion blur at all! It even has a 2ms response time which is unheard of with PC IPS screens (and it's 3 years old!)! If they can get it right with IPS TV's, then why can't they do the same with IPS monitors?
