Question Display Port to DVI-D (idiot) question.

    Hi.

I have a "1GB ATI FirePro V4900 PCI-E" which has two display port sockets which i intent to connect to two LG-ips234v-pn
    http://www.ebuyer.com/389760-lg-ips2...onitor-ips234v

The graphics card comes supplied with 1x

So i thought i would just order another but a review says "It will not work for connecting a Displayport graphics card output to a DVI monitor. You need an active adapter for that."

So now im a bit confused!! (told you it was an idiot question)

so do i need something like this?

Surely the gfx would come with a cable that had a use??

    Any help appreciated!

    Thanks.

    T

I am not 100% on this, but I believe you only need an active adapter if you connect 3 monitors at the same time.

Also, if you want 3 monitors you would only need 1 active adapter and 1 passive adapter each, as the video card is able to handle the DVI signal for 1 of the Displayport outputs by itself.

Re: Display Port to DVI-D (idiot) question.

Passive adapters will work fine with that monitor. They only support a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, so if you have a 2560x1440/1600 monitor you need active adapters.

For graphics cards that support Eyefinity, you need active adapters to run more than 2 monitors as the GPU only has 2 clock generators, which are required for HDMI/DVI connections but not for displayport connections. However, for the card you have, which only has 2 outputs, that's not a problem. So if you only want to run 2 DVI monitors at no higher than 1920x1200 resolution, passive adapters will work fine

Incidentally, OP - love that username
