    Monitor Response time

Hey everyone I was wondering if I can get some advice.

My Partner is looking to get into PC gaming and were looking at what we can afford, with regards to Monitors and gaming I know resolution and a low response time is important but I was wondering just how high can you go with response time until it starts becoming an issue?

    Re: Monitor Response time

Standard res is HD or 1920x1080 pixels after that it just goes up and up. Screens need to have good response times for Gaming to avoid motion blur.

Personally I use the Dell U2412M as it's an IPS panel for much higher picture quality and acceptable gaming performance. It's timing is about 8ms, which is much higher than some of the advertised screens, but is completely OK for gaming.

Like all these things it rather depends on what you can afford. What's your budget ?

    Re: Monitor Response time

Ok first thing Phange has pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Don't listen to all this BS about oh high response time (5ms+) is unusable for gaming etc, its simpily not true, its true for people who are professional gamer (aka go to tournaments and play FPS games for money). People like you and me won't notice it, and even if you do its not going to make any difference.
Anything from 1ms-8ms is fine for gaming, anymore and I would start looking elsewhere though.

    Re: Monitor Response time

Thanks for the response guys it's much appreciated.

as for our budget were looking at about £120-£125, I did find this one that I though would be good but I was looking at getting the response time as low as possible while maintaining full HD
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/22-ii...m-speakers-2ms

but in reality were good with anything up to about 8ms ?

+ 1 for the LG IPS234V, that thing is a monster for the price.
You get all the deliciousness that is a IPS screen.

Thanks for the reply again guys.

Phage I just had a look at those two screens you have listed, the LG has a response time of 12ms which is higher than what was previously recommended and the Dell is out of our price range, are you sure the LG would be ok for gaming?

    Re: Monitor Response time

I agree, for £113 the LG IPS234V with its IPS screen is a bit of a steal. Although it is worth bearing in mind which IPS screen you get. E-IPS screens are the least appreciated with AH-IPS being the latest iteration of the technology.

Right now amazon have the Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM for £180 with 64 out of 74 reviewers giving it a 5 star rating. There is a newer model, for just £160, which is sitting in my wishlist at the moment. Or i may take the plunge and go for the Asus PA238Q at £210.

    Re: Monitor Response time

I'm not a gamer myself and my needs in a monitor are design orientated so response time isn't my number one concern.

However, i have been researching this topic quite a lot recently and on my travels i've heard similar rumors about ghosting on slower refresh rates.

I think you need to consider the capability of your PC. For instance, if you have a high spec machine that easily clocks 60fps with everything maxed out then maybe you want a 120hz screen so you can get a higher framerate (or use nVidia 3D). Also, your motherboard capabilities, like having VirtuMVP to compensate in-game tearing effects.

Also, cheaper monitors come with other issues, like backlight bleed, fewer connections or the ability to adjust the picture quality.

    LG 234 is 5ms http://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-IPS...specifications

Got my youngest the 224 for Christmas, its a cracking screen. Would have had the 234 but it wouldn't fit in between shelve uprights on his desk.

The LG is a competent allround monitor. The Dell was around 155 quid recently.
